I don't recommend that you take it very far using a dx5. I've ran out of range in under 300 meters using a dx6i. I was however using a park-flyer diversity receiver. What receiver are do you have in yours?
Also, I highly recommend an FM or UHF system. Currently flying 72 mhz without any problems.
