Man, JSSR... you have a genius for elegant designs. I can't see this being practical to build and operate small scale, but it looks like it would be a great design for something like artillery pieces or rocket launchers.

Are you referring to the o-ring you can see in the picture where it's assembled? If so, that's not the stem o-ring, that's the fill port o-ring.

That first design schematic looks like it might be super touchy to tune. But this last one looks perfect for my next build; bolt action precharged cartridge airsoft sniper... With standard shop tools, it might be a pain to build, but with a lathe in the equation, it might actually be the simplest me...

My ways are solid steel 1/2 inch thick and supported in three (soon to be four) places, bolted VERY securely to an 80 lb concrete bed. Rigidity may still be a problem, but I think steel rod is a far cry from even 40...

Actually, the Gingery has been at the top of my 'want to do' list for a long time. :) I ultimately decided to try this first, since the Gingery lathe requires more casting skill than I currently have (ie, none) as well as needing access to a fair amount of aluminum raw. I'll probably try one someday...
