Re: Steampunk Sidearm
Oh, derp... I forget who I'm talking to. Yeah, I see what you mean now. Machining it like that WOULD cut down on any chance of blow-by knocking the o-ring out of place.

Re: Twist and Shoot
Man, JSSR... you have a genius for elegant designs. I can't see this being practical to build and operate small scale, but it looks like it would be a great design for something like artillery pieces or rocket launchers.

Re: Steampunk Sidearm
Glad to finally have joined it!
Are you referring to the o-ring you can see in the picture where it's assembled? If so, that's not the stem o-ring, that's the fill port o-ring.
Thanks! I may modify the trigger design, but I'm keeping the color bluing... it's so cool!

Re: "Valveless" piloted o-ring detent concept
That first design schematic looks like it might be super touchy to tune. But this last one looks perfect for my next build; bolt action precharged cartridge airsoft sniper... With standard shop tools, it might be a pain to build, but with a lathe in the equation, it might actually be the simplest me...

Re: Steampunk Sidearm
The frame and grips will be the same piece, similar to the flintlocks of ye olde days. The pictures aren't perfect, so if you can't see it well, the red wood is some beautifully curly red oak I bought from a local specialty lumber mill. Once it's shaped and polished, it ought to be gorgeous, especia...

Dude, that magazine system is so cool it's ridiculous.

Re: Steampunk Sidearm
It's good to be back. I really enjoy Spudfiles, particularly all the great guys on here.
I've got a peice of curly red oak I cut into two identical grips. They'll sandwich the single action trigger mechanism and a white pine spacer. I'm away from my shop right now, so pics when I get home.

Steampunk Sidearm
It's been a LONG time since I was on Spudfiles... In the interim, I got a minilathe and I've played with it a lot. Obviously, airguns are the goto project for a lathe and since my family used to play a lot of airsoft, I went with an airsoft style system. In steampunk. Obviously. Barrel and Chamber E...

Re: Pneumatic Pressures: The Safe, The Possible, And The Cra
Is it a bad thing that every single one of your warning points made me go " oh, cool !!"? :D More seriously, though, I think simply GETTING to 10,000 PSI at all would be a learning experience. By the time you were able to achieve those pressures, you'd have learned a LOT. And the fact that it's unch...

Re: DIY Mini Lathe Build Log (Photo Heavy)
Fortunately, based on tests last night, I think I've got all those problems covered. My ways are solid steel 1/2 inch thick and supported in three (soon to be four) places, bolted VERY securely to an 80 lb concrete bed. Rigidity may still be a problem, but I think steel rod is a far cry from even 40...

Re: DIY Mini Lathe Build Log (Photo Heavy)
I had a meeting at work today, so I dropped by the hardware store at the way home and grabbed some parts to make the lead-screw for the tool carriage. The lead-screw is 5/16 inch all-thread. 1125163448.jpg The shaft-collars hold the lead-screw in place fairly tightly with minimal slip when I reverse...

Re: DIY Mini Lathe Build Log (Photo Heavy)
That's a distinct possibility, but as you say, good learning experience.
How are you concluding that, btw? Is the 1/2 stock not stiff enough at all, or is it the way I'm supporting it?

Re: DIY Mini Lathe Build Log (Photo Heavy)
Actually, the Gingery has been at the top of my 'want to do' list for a long time. :) I ultimately decided to try this first, since the Gingery lathe requires more casting skill than I currently have (ie, none) as well as needing access to a fair amount of aluminum raw. I'll probably try one someday...

Re: DIY Mini Lathe Build Log (Photo Heavy)
I went down to the hardware store and got a piece of 3/4 inch steel square tube to make the tool carriage from. The carriage is 8 inches long and 4 inches wide. Unfortunately, due to some wobble in my drill press (and difficulty getting accurate measurements) the holes in the carriage slides weren't...
