Re: Semi-auto Vortex Cannon! (SUCCESS)

Indeed, and I wouldn't be surprised if I end up revisiting this vortex cannon at some point in the future. If I do, it probably won't be as an office toy because that one constraint really tied my hands with this project. But without size, noise, and air supply being an issue, I'm sure I could make ...

Re: Semi-auto Vortex Cannon! (SUCCESS??)

Well, some good and bad news. I picked up an airzooka for comparison sake, and quite frankly, it's owning my cannon. Don't get me wrong -- my cannon has a much better power-to-air volume ratio, but the superior efficiency just can't overcome the sheer air volume the airzooka is pushing (several hund...

Re: Semi-auto Vortex Cannon! (SUCCESS)

When you are limiting the volume of valve/chamber don't forget that there is a dead space between cone throat and valve opening. Pressure at the cone throat is important and it's what makes the difference in vortex power and speed.. Now if you limit the volume of your chamber and use higher pressur...

Re: Semi-auto Vortex Cannon! (SUCCESS)

Now if you have to limit the chamber size you might consider limiting the volume of the QEV. Of course only if you experience problems at higher pressures Just checked 160 PSI and 150 PSI with the 0-link chamber, no dice. I hope filling that plug with epoxy will get me close to 160 PSI. If it can't...

Re: Semi-auto Vortex Cannon! (SUCCESS)

You can push that QEV a little bit you know. I used a 3/4" one at 500 psi. I am sure someone here tried going higher than that. 200 or 250 psi would be fine Oh wow, ok. I figured the 150 PSI rating had some sort of buffer built into it but I didn't think it'd be that high. That's good to know! The ...

Re: Semi-auto Vortex Cannon! (SUCCESS)

Interesting findings. Now it would be a good idea to try higher pressures (though your findings suggest that you might have to find a way to further limit chamber size) So the plug I'm using looks like this: http://www.plumbingsupply.com/images/stainless-steel-fitting-plug.jpg And here's a pic of i...

Re: Semi-auto Vortex Cannon! (SUCCESS)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballistic_pendulum ..and camera. Great suggestion! I made a ballistic pendulum ( video here ) and did some tests. It turns out that my suspicions were on to something. As mentioned before, I tested 7 different chambers sizes (ranging from 0 to 6 "links") across 5 differ...

Re: Semi-auto Vortex Cannon! (SUCCESS)

Tippmann 98 is not a good example as it is a typical HP gun. Electropneumatics use lower pressures. Besides operating pressure isn't the same as breech pressure. Electropneumatics aren't cheap ;) So, is the consensus that entry-level (cheap) paintball markers crank out decent PSI at the breech? Do ...

Re: Semi-auto Vortex Cannon! (SUCCESS)

Anatine Duo , See below for a cross-section of the cone: http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o673/shiddymunkie/Cone_CutAway_zps89de9680.png As you can see, the cone is essentially a nozzle with two main parts. The air that comes out of the QEV is allowed to expand in the larger diameter of the chamb...

Re: Semi-auto Vortex Cannon! (SUCCESS)

Well I was looking for a Diy solution I hear ya. There are many ways you could make this cone -- I don't believe it needs to be super precise in order for it to work. It could be something as simple as rolling up some sheet metal and securing it with rivets or screws. You might even be able to make...

Re: Semi-auto Vortex Cannon! (SUCCESS)

Nice Now just get a fridge compressor and use 500 psi on this also experiment with chamber size I am thinking about buying a cheap paintball gun and swapping the barrel out with this cone, as that seems to be one of the cheapest/easiest ways to really ramp up the PSI given the limits of my current ...

Semi-auto Vortex Cannon! (SUCCESS)

The cone arrived today, a few days before I expected it to (kudos shapeways): http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o673/shiddymunkie/IMG_8844_cropped_zps1251a8f2.jpg http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o673/shiddymunkie/IMG_8846_cropped_zps91b52731.jpg You may have also noticed that the chamber looks...

Re: Semi-auto Vortex Cannon!

So the cone should be arriving 4/1 or 4/2, but in the meantime I wanted to see what sort of result I could get from a high-pressure/low-volume blast from my setup. The main tank is about 260ml and the chamber is a scant 7.5ml in capacity (the smallest I am able to go, i.e. a single "link" in the exp...

Re: Semi-auto Vortex Cannon!

Also when designing conical nozzles you should have maximum of 30°cone angle (15° half angle), even better if closer or under 20°, otherwise the flow might separate from the nozzle walls.. and you don't want that. :) From what I've calculated, my nozzle should have a cone angle of approx 8.6° (4.29...
