Hi all,

This is intended for Australians who are in the know. I'm having a lot of trouble finding the high pressure PN18 pipe in 4" and many other PVC things here in Australia. Does anyone know of suppliers where I can buy PN18 pipe by the meter in 2" and 4" ? Thanks

p.s. Have found PN12 pipe in 4" for $50AUD a meter. I believe the PN12 stuff is only rated to about 160psi though and I'd really want to get something with the higher PN18 rating (~260psi) for safety reasons even if I'm only putting 75-100psi in it. Or is that not a big deal?

I will also note to anyone looking for things that I found the following things locally:

Bunnings: GardenMate 25mm sprinkler valve $21.50
Bunnings: Nitto male fitting $4
Bunnings: Various brass fittings approx $4-5 each

PN12 is rated for 175 psi (12 bar, so it's always PN number x 14.7 psi) - this does not mean that you take it it 180 psi and it explodes, in fact it's probably good for 250 psi at least. There already is a built-in safety factor, if you're not going to exceed 100 psi then you're very well within the level of abuse the pipe can take.

If you have little experience with pneumatics I can understand that there's an element of mistrust and fear of the unknown, so one tends to be overcautious. Not a bad thing of course, nothing wrong with being safe, but as you get more experience you realise the limit is usually not as low as you feared it would be.

With regards to this thread, are you suggesting he can obtain the parts he's missing by chopping them off his fellow Australians?

I'll second what jsr said, you're still going to be quite safe for those pressures with pn12 (so long as you are not planning on hitting your gun against a wall or putting it in a freezer before use)

Also, I have a feeling that those garden mate sprinler valves from bunnings are only rated to 175psi just like the pn12 pipe so it might be a bit of overkill if you fork out the money to have everything but your sprinkler valve rated to pn18...

A solution to your problem might be to either wrap your pipe in fiberglass if you happen to have acess to a lot of it or you could always go metal 8)

from what ive found, the fittings i n bunnings are PN18 and they also have pn12 40(perfect GB barrel ) & 50 mm by the meter. in the one i went to it was out with all the long timber etc, out the back.

EDIT; they may have even had larger sizes, but i was not looking

When I went to one of the larger bunnings stores I could not fine any pressure rated PVC pipe of fittings above 50mm.
Oh, and your right about the 40mm pipe being a great golf ball barrel, I don't think you could fine a better fit, perfect to the atom

Just out of curiosity I rang a special plastics supplier to inquire about the price of 100mm either clear PVC or acrylic pipe (can't quite remember) but for a 3-5m length the price was in excess of $1200 My dreams of a classy clear chambered combustion were over

I think that price you got was a bit whack. I was quoted $50 p/m and I think that's too high. I'll keep looking.

I can only seem to find cat 6 end caps in 4" and that's a bit worrying. I suppose I'd really want an end cap of PN12 at least. The rating 6 wouldn't even be rated to hold 100 psi. Anybody in Australia know of PN12 4" caps?

Forget that I think I have this cat and PN thing all messed up. I think I'm looking at a site that gives a cat number and I thought they were referring to the PN number. I am probably looking at fittings of around PN12 I suppose, on the Dural Irrigation and Wet Earth sites. Wish it had the PN rating listed...

Fittings of pressure rated PVC pipe in Australia are always of a PN18 rating,therefore cutting out any factors of wrong pressure rated fitting being used by them simply not existing

I happen to have about 2meters of 100mm PN18 pipe sitting in my shed,if you want it I'll part with it for a carton of Extra dry although I do live about 4 hours south of Brisbane/Gold Coast.

with all respect, not all are rated PN 18... i was down at three separate hardware/plumbing stores and they were all PN 12
