Yea I can confirm milk does fix galv sickness, its saved me many a time, the symptoms are similar to cyanide poisoning. I never heard of using acid on galv before welding, I’ll have to try it, Ive always just sanded the area a bit with a flap disc.

hydrochloric acid reacts with zinc to form zinc chloride and hydrogen gas you will know all the zinc is gone once the aria stops fizzing and bubbling then it is time to remove from the acid and thoroughly clean the metal of all acid if you do not, it will cause the steel to rust badly also the WD-40 helps protect the steel once you are done cause after the acid is done with it there is nothing protecting it
also I cannot over emphasize enough to be careful with Hydrochloric acid really nasty stuff so be careful


also on the fume fever topic if you get a metallic taste in your mouth like pennies you know you have fume fever and it is time to empty the milk jug

yes hydrochloric acid is useful but toxic sh|t... when we were young we used to pour it in a coke bottle with a bit of aluminium foil then run like hell, the noise is deafening and kills any plants nearby also if you put a flaming oily rag next to it the hydrogen gas explodes in a huge fireball. My mate accidently breathed some fumes and had a sore throat for like a month. Pretty dangerous looking back on it, no one try it

I always drink milk after I've been casting and usually after welding (I drink a load of milk anyway) and it usually makes me feel better.

It doesn't take too long to remove zinc with a flap disk (sanding discs, heavy wire disc etc.). I'd rather not use acid on it unless it was for a large number of parts which could be dipped, washed, then coated together.

It's not that bad..it isn't very strong (as an acid) and not that corrosive. If you want nasty stuff, then open up my little teflon bottle full of 70% HF. Still, nothing you want to spill on you and ESPECIALLY something you don't want there while your welding. Stuff near the weld could dissociate into hydrogen and chlorine and stuff further away will probably just become gaseous (HCl)..and condense later in your lungs.

Perhaps dipping it in a weak base solution (a non-corrosive one) would be the way to go for safety.

zinc chloride is a water soluble salt so you can just wash it off no problems there

hydrochloric acid is quite nasty enough, some idiot once dropped a bottle close to me spilling some over my legs so I know (I think he did it on purpose). lucky for him I was too busy washing the stuff off otherwise I would have put him in the hospital
