There's a guy in California who has made a large quantity of explosives at home (ETN, PETN, HMTD), and stockpiled them in mason jars and homemade grenades. There's a good thread on APC about it here:

Here's the first news article about it:

There's more up to date stuff available with a google search. Recently, a judge decided to not cancel the burn on the terrorists request. (Don't say he's a hobbyist. He's a terrorist. There is no reason to have so many improvised explosives in your home, and even less of a reason to have half of it inside homemade hand grenades).

Perhaps you didn't read my thread, Ino, but the careful observer will recall that the news reports said the police recovered, and I quote, "hundreds of pipe bombs, grenades, and land mines" from my shed. They also managed to mistake icing sugar and flour for multi-kilogram bags of HE, and insisted upon inflating the 2.6g of primary in my possession at the time to "at least a pound", a statement which was never retracted and was actually presented by one of their "expert witnesses". That makes me a terrorist, right? There's more up to date stuff available with a google search. Recently, a judge decided to not cancel the burn on the terrorists request. (Don't say he's a hobbyist. They spent 12 hours removing that 2.6g of primary (along with roughly 10g of flash) from my shed, during which time they evacuated roughly a 100m radius around it. How much more would there have to have been before they decided to burn it to the ground?
The media and police are not particularly reliable sources in ANY case. What makes you think that their statements in this particular case carry so much weight?
Also:
Guess I should keep quiet about what you're planning for New Year's, eh?There is no reason to have so many improvised explosives in your home

I've found the source of the ticking! It's <s>a pipe bomb</s> DYI's shed!DYI wrote:The news reports said the police recovered, and I quote, "hundreds of pipe bombs, grenades, and land mines" from my shed.
Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?

I was thinking of your incident the whole time DYI:)
Though I treated the story with suspicion at first, I figured there was probably some truth to it when I saw the blast wall they were putting up. Exaggerating numbers and evacuating the immediate area is one thing, but I don't think a blast wall would be used if there isn't at least some shrapnel risk.
I'd like to know how much they are actually going to light up, though? I've seen some pretty stupid moves by BS guys before, though not in the middle of a populated area.

It does seem likely that this guy had some significant quantity of explosives in his house, I'm just warning against labeling people as "terrorists" based on what the media or police say about them.Fnord wrote:Though I treated the story with suspicion at first, I figured there was probably some truth to it when I saw the blast wall they were putting up.
