Hey, JSR, on the subject of future prices and availability, you may be slightly pessimistic. In the late fifties and early sixties, IBM was selling the first computers to big businesses to the tune of 2.3 million dollars.
Now you can buy cell phones with greater capability than those computers, for less than 50$. I don't think the 3d tech is too far away from being super cheap, and still very good.

Also, the printed gun? Pretty silly. And they are concerned about KIDS printing them off? Oh, brother. The average 16 yr old in his dads car is more dangerous than a marine and his rifle.

Everyone has a cellphone though, not every household will want a 3D printer, especially as we live in an age of more people willing to consume than create. New techniques with perhaps different materials would also have to be created in order to make it viable.

Also, you have to remember, lots of people WILL want them, but can't afford them. The 3d printers are going to be one time buys and won't be replaced in a hurry, so the manufacturers are going to constantly need to build machines for a different "demographic". This means either better or cheaper, and most people go for the latter.

You are SO darn lucky to have access to one, though. I'd do anything short of murder to have one.

You're missing one of the points which is that much like normal printers, the manufacturers make more money selling the consumable than the machine.

Hm. True on the printer point. I guess even if the printers got real cheap, the sellers would do the same thing they do with regular printers. Make a killing on the ink, or in this case, plastic.

I'm pretty sure they could have made it a direct blowback semi/full auto with a bit of imagination, but that would have given the Feds an even bigger heart attack.

People are already refining the design and adding all manner of inserts and modifications.

I took my pen gun (not charged or loaded) in my pocket into the plane without a problem on my final's trip to Budapest (where beer is sometimes cheaper than water )
I could have it loaded and charged and still bring it on board.
(After this I had fears about flying, if I can do it, so does somebody else)
