At a robotics camp I was at recently, one of my camp counselors overheard me talking about how I wanted to power my bike with an electric motor, and how I was into pneumatic things.

next day, he shows up with a bag full of this stuff and gives it to me:


From left to right along the top, it goes:
CIM motor for FIRST robotics competitions (VERY POWERFUL)
4 pneumatic cylinders
3 4-way Solenoid Valves
High-tourque Gear Motor
High-tourque hobby motor

As for the little corner I missed:
Silver thing: Planetary gearbox
Little black things: Check Valves
Thing wrapped in wires: 4-way solenoid valve with EXTREMELY small ports.

Yes, I thanked him very much. And he gave me a huge bag of fittings as well. none fit the little solenoid or the larger of the pneumatic cylinders, but whatever, I can purchace them from SMC pneumatics, along with hoses.

The CIM motor will be used to power my bycicle. Any ideas on how to get the motor to the bike would be much appreciated, as my idea might be a little overcomplex.

And he is a worker at FIRST and one day a few years back he came in and they were giving all kinds of awsome stuff away to teachers (he is a teacher) and he snagged it all. he says its been taking up space in his workshop and he is happy to get rid of it, that and he has like 50 more of everything........

EDIT: Planetary gearboxes are really cool on the inside......... i have no use for the planetary gearbox so i opened it up. kinda cool......... almost psychadelic!!!! TOTALLY LOOPY MAN!. anyway i put it back together again too...... woot.

How many RPM is the motor (for bike)? Also HP? and voltage?

A speed controller grip would probably be ideal (on that link).
Perhaps you could get the batteries, controller and charger from there.

I'm thinking also buy a luggage rack that mounts to the seat post.
And "beef" it up a bit, maybe remove the plastic tray and replace it with metal.
Then buy a few U shaped bolts for car exhausts from auto store. Mount the electric motor on the luggage rack using those. (Rubber sheet or old tube between U-bolts and motor).

Build a tray mounted onto the frame (can explain better later) mount the batteries on that to the hand grip speed control.

Depending on the rpm pulley or sprocket size gets determined (I have some simple ideas for that too). Luckily the direction standard motors spin, it will work opposite side as pedal controlled sprocket also! 8)

My plan was to use the little "luggage rack" thing (i have like 3 that are actually all metal ) and have the motor run a Roller that runs on the rear wheel along two arms. that way, I can engage/disengage the motor, and i can still pedal my bike normaly.... that and i can make sure my wheel doesnt spin at 5,500 RPM............

its a tried and true method. i once modified an Air Hogs car to run my bike in this fasion........ it actually worked..... didnt go fast but yes it worked........

5500 rpm is close to gas engines for that type stuff. (if it can run that speed w/load)
I would recommend a chain or pulley over friction drive. They work and all :

But wear down the tire and slip when it's wet losing power sometimes. (Lot's of info and parts there)! If you're set on one they sell the kits parts...

Perhaps a small sprocket for a gas application motor could be attached right onto the motor pulley (Bolts or welded) and run a chain down to one of these rear wheel mounted sprockets available here (Scrolled down and I found luggage racks too).

I'm thinking since the RPM should be similar that might work. (it's the 50 or 44 tooth rear sprocket $17 ea. and Sprocket mounting hardware $12.
They mount on standard spoke wheels! Or modded onto mags)
I'm tired to do math right now for gears and battery applications. 8)

I'll try to find some more useful links (other ideas) also. Been a little while since I've studied similar things.

Wow...that's quite a haul. I'd be jealous, but I've gotten my fair share of free stuff too
