Riding out the storm: Bring it on

Hurricane Gustav. The local weather station's wet dream. This weekend I helped my family buckle down the house to prepare for the storm. This is one man of a storm and since Katrina, most people are taking precaution to safeguard their livelihood.

Me and a few of my friends are planning on making a 4 wheeler ride out in the Bonne Carre spillway on monday. I know this may seem crazy, but a little wind and rain won't hurt. The only problem is that we'll be going against the contraflow of the new orleans evacuation to get there.

Anyone else getting ready? Theres gotta be a few spudders beside Mark that live on the gulf coast in the ever so frightening "cone of uncertainty"

that sucks man, i hope its not as bad as last year, the worst i ever git is the tropical storms left over from them. some times people evacuate to my town, and live at my school till the hurricane passes.

I say bring it on as well...will just mean more rainfall in the southeast, which we could use.

I lived in pensacola during Ivan, Dennis, and katrina... had two houses destroyed.... but if you want fun in high winds, get a long board(skateboard) a 12' 2x4 a 8' 2x4 a 1' 2x4 and some screws/nails... put the 1' 2x4 right behind the front wheels and screw/nail it firmly in place, then make a giant cross out of the other two pieces... firmly strap a blanket to the cross..... to use, place the base of the cross behind the board attached to the skatboard... face away from the wind, and if you come off the ground, or go faster than the bearings will allow(which eventually you will) let go(dont attach the cross to the board)... me and some buddies were doing this in 130+mph winds... after some trial and error getting started, we discovered that about 30 seconds of uninterrupted travel will get you going fast enough to cause the grease in the bearings to catch fire... at about 80 miles an hour... it was fun until one of us got road rash on 50% of his body and no ambulance could possibly arrive for 6 hours, and even then the debris prevented any chance of them coming after that... good times...

Heh, I love living in Canada at times like this. I saw a show about a supervolcano, and apparently, it just misses eastern Canada.

Ive never even felt any of the so called "earthquakes" that have apparently happened in England, we just get rain

Up in the northeast states all we get snow. All snow really does is get school canceled every once in a while.

I think that where I live (Maryland) is perfect, we occasionally get the leftovers of hurricanes, but they are rarely enough for people to evacuate. We also get snow in the winter, so that means school gets canceled every once in a while. (a few years back we had 3 feet of snow, school was closed for a whole week 8) )

@daxspudder: Simple solution to grease catching fire - use silicon grease, practically fireproof, you could take a blowtorch to it and it wouldn't go up.

Very useful on air rifle seals, because it can't diesel.
