Knife Thread

Starman and I started talking a bit about knives. I don't know if there are any other knife fans out there, or perhaps you just have one knife that you like a lot. Any way just thought it'd be interesting to see what people are using.

Here are a few of mine:

This first one holds a special place in my heart. It's a Spyderco Delica my wife bought for me on our honeymoon a few years back. It has a Malachite handle inlayed with yellow mussel shell. Simply gorgeous!



This one is a limited edition Benchmade Ares with a carbon Fiber handle and D2 steel for the blade, very very excellent knife:

I'm not the knife connoisseur that Radiation is but I do appreciate the need of having a decent blade by your side. I don't leave home without it.

Mine has a black tanto style blade that is partially serrated. It's the best knife I've ever owned. Easy to keep sharp, assisted opening, reversable pocket clip, no slip grip. The one I carry now is my second one just like it, and I've never purchased the same knife twice. The first one was dropped and I broke the tip off of it.

I only have an old butterfly knife which almost falls apart. I mainly use it as a screwdriver or mail opener.

I should buy a nice knife too. That first one of you is awesome radiation!

For the purposes of contributing a bit, I have a multi tool that's a piece of cheap crap.

Still useful though. Almost always got it with me.

... i know they have their uses.. but what are the laws on carrying in the US?

I think it is a state regulated thing, in most cases they are OK to carry as long as the blade isn't over a certain length (3.5" comes to mind, but it's been a while since I looked). Of course there are the exceptions of airports and elementry/junior/high schools.

my understanding is nothing over 4 inch for personal carry, no switchblades no autos unless you are law enforcement. And depending on where you live no butterfly knives. Oddly enough you can carry a fixed blade as long as it isn't longer than 4".

Any knife is restricted from student carry in most public schools here, even carries potential criminal prosecution... Such is life with the so called "zero tolerance" rules the PC crowd started putting into effect in the late 90s. For adults going about their business, a small pocket knife is no big deal.

My Kershaw blade is only 2" and does everything I need it to. I basically just need to remember to leave it at home if going through airport security.

I usually carry a 3.5 inch blade Faulkner for use at home; if I'm on vacation in the north woods or something, I carry either my Winchester or Buck fixed blade. They get the job done.

I do appreciate having a good, reliable knife around, thought a lot of people in the peaceful little suburban area where I live seem to be afraid of them (I believe these people are referred to as "sheeples" by the knife-carrying community).

I used to keep one of those in my toolbox. Don't know what happened to it though.

suberban spudgunner - what kinds of jobs you do that require a knife like that? I understand if it was hunting or something, but does it really call for a large fixed blade?

Rag - As far as multitools are concerned, I've found nothing better than a Gerber. With its one handed use and durability, I've yet to not use mine (which is about 7 years old) on any project I'm working on.

I have one of those too Frank...keep it in my truck tool case. I use it for a little rougher work like sheetrock or ceiling tile cutting...easy to replace blades. That keeps my pocket knife in better shape.
