I recently got to play with one of those Air Zookas that you get at Wal-Mart and such, the ones where you pull back the bag and let go and a blast of air hits a person up to 30 feet away, the box said 20 feet but we felt it up to 30, these things are really fun, the air moves slowly so at first you think they miss then whoomp right past your face.

They look simple enough to make, I might build one with a trigger possibly pump-action blasting air at everything and everyone, I might be able to make a longer ranged "rifle" like one.

Please post some pics or a diagram of the inside of one of those. I want to know how they work and have wanted to build one ever since I first saw them. You can't buy those where I live.

Sorry, meant to add a pic.

Basically, it's a hollow tube that is slightly cone shaped with a lip on the barrel end, the back has a plastic bag over it that has rubber bands attached to it and attach to the rubber bands are attack to the barrel end. You pull the bag back, let go, and the rubber bands pull the bag forward pushing the air out.

Fore more pics just google image "Air Zooka"

How big is the lip? When you don't pull back on the plastic bag how far does it sit inside the body?

those are really fun to put some fog in from a fog machine and shoot them. you can see the air moving that way.

Well the bag is slack enough that it pulls back about 3-4 inches, and inwards the same distance.

My old science teacher made one, got all technical and called it a vortex cannon, he used a full size aluminum trash can, cut a 2 1/2'' or 3'' hole in the bottom and covered the top w/ some kind of fabric, he just tapped it and it shot air. He used smoke bombs to show the vortex. After seeing this I went home and made one using a 5 gal bucket, cut a 2'' hole in bottom, and duct taped the top :). I use my smoke machine to fill it and blast air, it only goes 15' or so, but very cool.

As for Atlantis's idea on a riffle, I dont see why not, try a huge chamber and small hole, maybe you can make it so the barrel gradually shrinks like a cone. When I get time im going to find another 5 gal bucket and make a cone for it, maybe a 1'' hole at end. Im thinking that this will add more punch and less distance. Unless you can make something that moves a lot of air.
