Last week on trash day I saw a Beer keg out at the curb.
I was remembering the first time I pushed the ball into the top and got sprayed in face with beer. Mmmm...

Looks like one would make a great valve for a very large hammer struck repeater.
The kegs a little bulky so I am wondering if just the valve part could be removed and somehow mounted into a metal pipe. Maybe similar to the way a burst disk is attached in a cartridge.

Anyone worked on/thought of these or any ideas? What kind of pressure could it hold?

BTW, It's nice to think big. Thanks in advance. 8)

Sounds like a great way to waste a beer keg hehe - you'd need one hell of a hammer to knock that valve open at say 100 psi.

Hello JSR, Great to get your reply,
True, but I'm probably quiting drinking:
(Too much trouble, wasted time, useless calories and trying to pick up ugly women through beer goggles). :P

Anyway, I was thinking of a bolt-action repeater with a large spring on the barrel.
The barrel would be cocked forward and loaded.
Then the trigger pull will release it to smack backward against the ball.

I'm more interested in the valve since I was thinking portable (scrapping the keg part). This type firing seems to be suited to higher pressure mostly.

No camera use right now, and my paint skills aren't too good. :( 8)

i agree, youd need a damn sledge hammer to open it at any pressure! why not incorporate the keg as a chamber with another valve
really good quote/phrase here

I'll drink to that :)

Do you know what the diameter of the valve is? For example if it's around half an inch and you're using say 50 psi, that's at least 40 lbs of force that you're going to need to knock open the valve. This means your bolt action's going to be very hefty to cock, as well as the not inconsiderable engineering effort required to manufacture the structure needed to support it.

Just ran to check, It's hard to measure down inside the nozzle but the plastic opening is about 7/8" inch. (The ball is bigger)

Just thought about it, American beer keg. maybe they're different other places?

With the design, I was designing to shoot arrows (long as large crossbow bolts)
That's why just a bolt-action would be nice.
(Hard to design a semi- full size arrow shooter).

I was thinking the spring would have further movement than some were thinking. It would just be a large spring around the barrel. (EDIT:It's movement would be the length of arrow)

@STHORNE, I LOL'd , brought back high school memories :D 8)

That's a lot of area that the air pressure will be pushing on, your hammer spring's going to have to come from a motorbike suspension  :D

Or use a pneumatic hammer, activated by.... another hammer valve! :D

I was fooling with a metal kiddy pogo-stick, and when I stand on it the spring compresses fully. It's got decent travel too.
Perhaps a foot stirrup design (out of the way of muzzle of course).

I was at a friends helping out for the weekend. He's got a 10 ft. section of 4" inch metal Rigid Conduit (for electrical) pipe I can have.

Fourth o' July is coming and since all his neighbors shoot guns every year
(I had to wait to leave one year, fear of stray bullets).

Hmmm... Perhaps an advanced combustion out of the keg w/ 10 ft. 4" barrel. Think it will work???
Haven't messed with combustions for a while.
Thanks  8)

A keg would make an ideal shape for a combustion chamber, being relatively close to the elusive spherical shape :)

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I got an idea how to mount the valve in a pipe for the chamber, but also cut the same pipe to contain the rest of the parts.
It will be a while for testing. But I'll try to post a sketch probably.

I am very interested in using the keg body as a chamber for a combustion like spud yeti suggested, and JSR's reply got me interested in. 4" metal barrel, hopefully metered, w/ keg chamber!!! 8)

IDK if I can finish it by July 4 as I would like. (Bunch of stuff going on now)
But I'll surely post it when it's finished . 8)
