Modding a Rainbird 200PEB valve

Hey all.
Recently acquired the above-mentioned valve, already had JBweld in the noid hole, but other than that it's stock.
My main question is, should i remove the guiderod assembly and tap in a nipple, or should i machine an adapter for it that would leave the guiderod in place?
tapping a hole in the side is out of the question due to the thinness of the material at the sides and the fact that the phram is about 1/16" away from them when in the open position.
I'd take pictures, but i don't have a camera with me at my current residence.
