I am building hopefully improved version of the paint ball rocket launcher (reloading after every shot? what is with that) and was wondering how long i should make the shells to fit a pocket nerf foot ball?

Depends; air through breech, or air through side cartridges?

Air through breech cartridges need only be about 7 inches long

And air through side cartridges payload area needs to be about 7 inches long.

As I side note:
Were the heck do you get NERFs anymore?!?!

Online is the best place to find them. I can't find them locally anymore.

Link

Also, can anyone link me to the online seller of nerf-like footballs but were specifically made for paintball?

a lot of dollar stores have them.

2inch SCH 40 PVC fits them beautifully.

I have been thinking about making a Full size RPG with Preloaded cartridges with Nerf Rockets (footballs).

The other way to do it is a breech loaded pneumatic. If you want to keep it simple you could include a sprinkler valve, however a piston would be more effective for this type of application.

i think these are what you are looking for, however in my opinion they are overpriced and not as good as the nerfs. you can find some reveiws on them here and decide for yourself. you can also order nerfs online for cheap here, only thing is you have to order $300.00 worth of nerfs

From what I remember nerfs are about 7" (6-15/16" actual from the ones I measured). 2" bulb, due to variation in foam density that size can be a best guess. I've had some that fall out of a 2" barrel and others that stay.
It is a guarantee you will need to trim the fins. They stick out a good 1/8" over the bulb width.

If you are looking for nerfs in the US check dollar general or family dollar. I've found them both there and they run about $2 a piece. Whatever you do stay away from the JCS foam rockets. THEY ARE HORRIBLE!!!!

goathunter,

You don't have to trim the fins, you can just fold them inside the barrel.
That's what I do and they fire perfectly fine and have a good spin.

For loading I would recommend either goathunter's break-barrel method, or something like mine:
http://www.spudfiles.com/forums/v-a-l-p ... 14702.html

Either one works fine and each have there own pros and cons. goathunters break-barrel is probably harder to make but quick to reload. Whereas mine is easier to make but may take longer to load.

P.S Sorry I don't have a link to Goat's gun on me but you should easily find it by searching, if I recall correctly it is called Goats Gun.

thanks every one. did not really think about where i was going to get them but thanks for the links.

i did have a look at yours MrCrowley but i stuffed up i misread what barrel you used for the nerf so i got the 40mm pipe  so this will have to be a golf ball prototype. but i got class 12 pipe so it is still good for the chamber.

making my own reloading method just a huge top loading version of my old shell rifle. will proberly end up more of a tank gun then a rocket launcher

edit
the 40mm class 12 pipe fits 25mm couplings (standard class 18) perfectly inside.

That's true you can. But I've found if you trim the fins you drastically reduce the chances of blowing the fins off of the bulb. Those foam fins create a whole lot of friction on PVC.As a bonus (courtesy of physics) the reduced friction helps to increase range and accuracy.

so i got the 40mm pipe Embarassed
40mm ID ? If so, you can still use nerfs. Both the MCS and Goat's gun have 1.5" barrels. The trick is to wrap the football in a paper strip (as well as trim the fins).Again reducing friction. Paper is a great dry lubricant for PVC.

i got the 40mm od stuff i rushed my research and brought the wrong stuff.

great guns , i cant usually be bothered with painting so mine usually end up with that "duct tape and chewing gum" look this will proberly be no different
