I'm trying to think of a way to create a piston valve that rotates. Basically instead of moving back and forth in a pipe it would rotate... and ideas how to do this?

It won't work. how would it actuate? Pretty much all spudding concepts are based off other things. Try and find a car piston that rotates instead of going up and down.

It would be desirable to have a twisting valve for various reasons, but pressure cannot directly create a twisting force, so coming up with an idea would be very difficult. However - do it, and you're really on the money.

However, it would almost certainly not be related to the piston valve in any sense that would immediately make sense - so it wouldn't be a piston valve.

Still, I'm going to have to curse you all AGAIN - because it's now past midnight, and you've set my mind thinking, so I won't be able to get to sleep.

you could have the barrel towerds the top of the chamber and have the piston have a chunck missing like a pie then tap the pipe at an angle on the side. have a tube ging from that to the chamber with a blow valve in the middle. when you sqeez the blow valve it hits the piston wich is like a water wheel with two circles with flat peices in the middle to cacth air. it will rotate and line th hole in the piston with the barrel. only problem is seal on the barel would create a lot of friction when you turn it.

That would be quite simple. Ile make a CAD and post.

In this, there is a tee, the rotaing piston, and the solid block that sits in a coupling. In the bottom of the tee, plop down a motor, connected to the piston. Everything needs to be greased up.
I can make a better one with faster opening later.

Well, why not just buy a ball valve?

To get the effect, you would need to get very creative as far as creating surface area to have air push against to actuate it. A neat idea, but probably not practical. A ball valve does describe what you are talking about, but it is manual.

This type of "piston" has two problems:
-Actuating
-Sealing

To get it actuating you will probably need some sort of eccentric circle mechanism. Like a rotary compressor. If not, you will probably have to deal with a piston system that turns the valve, which is impractical.
And I have no idea how to get this to seal.

If you wanted (and it's what you're talking about you could reverse the operation of a scroll pump.

How compressors work

Alright class, please refer to your diagrams of the M1 carbine. A simple solution would be a classic 'rotating bolt'. A linear piston with a tab that slides in an angular slot in the spinning part. Advance the piston, turn the valve. Quite rudimentary.

JSR drew up some good designs on this concept. Search "rotory valve" I think.
