After seeing the soda can cannon on myth busters i really wanted one. Rather than building a whole new cannon I figured Id get a new barrel for my golf ball gun. Do coke cans fit in 2 1/2 inch pipe, I tried one in 3 inch but Id need a bunch of wadding and Id like to avoid that if possible

Just find the diameter of the can then look
here for the I.D. of 2.5" PVC.

Apparently they're about 2.6" in diameter and average inside diameter of 2.5" schedule 40 pipe is 2.445" although, the inside diameter will vary between brands, pressure rating and standards.

Thin walled PVC will probably fit it...

I guess Ill just take a can and test it, they have a giant pile of scraps so even if it doesnt fit in that, maybe I can find something else

Wiki wrote:
Very few pipes fit standard-sized beverage cans; with the only stock pipe being 2.5" SDR 26. Such pipe has a total gap of .035", which is a pretty good fit.
Thats what I found...

This is what I would personally use.
You have your choice between two differant thickness of sidewall, but either will get you 2.625" ID.
Get an aluminum cap that's the OD of the barrel and have the center threaded out to your fitting, then have it welded on.

you need 2.5inch sdr 26. its a perfect fit, as good or better than golfballs in a golf ball barrel. i personaly have a 10ft one see here

and yes you can give someone a soda can from a long ways a way but it doesnt allways arive intact nor would i want to catch it...
