Is a coke bottle strong enough?

Boom! The classic potato gun harnesses the combustion of flammable vapor. Show us your combustion spud gun and discuss fuels, ratios, safety, ignition systems, tools, and more.

subterranean wrote:yes pete bottles are perfectly safe i have used 16.9 oz and 2liters but i dont think heat shrinking is a good idea its true that they become brittle.
you will want to keep the inside clean from resadue from areosols or it will cause them to melt.(just make sure not to spray too much in) and with the rough tests i did on pressure the 16.9 start brusting at 110 and the 2 liters at around 150. and there will always be exeptions for a faulty bottle. i used duck tape and wrappped some pete bottles and it increased the amount of pressure it held .....im starting to ramble anyway i say yes they are safe for combustion use
I just wanted to point out, some people have tested the effects of duct tape for containing shrapnel and etc.. and found that it's useless. Duct tape holds about 9 psi, anyway. Placebo effect, subterranean?

Peace,

Placebo effect for sure. On a mini cannon though, duct tape might help a bit. But on a bigger cannon...just use rated pipes

yeah you mite as well just pay for the pvc it cheap it cost me around
$15 to build my basic combustion and i still have enough to make 3 more.

i thought it would be ok to just use the large pill bottles but they are no where near as safe as the pvc. I had a pill bottle that was fairly thick and around a volume of 50cc and i loaded it up with carb cleaner and boom my barrel shot about 20 feet along with the rest of the chamber cracked off and my cap busted off. I was very lucky that it didn't expode the chamber. I wouldn't use coke bottles for combustion.

I said in the first post I already have a big one, but I need a mini-project to work on while I get a new sparker.

And im just saying depending on how big of a bottle you use is a matter of weather it exploads or not. Small pill bottles would work but using a large pill bottle or a coke bottle would not be too smart. Like i said i had one expload on me. Just the large version
