You will need these things.

Medium strength PVC Glue and PVC Primer
Can of aerosol deodorant, I use Right Guard, but I have heard Brute works better. Hair spray is OK, but I would not recommend it because it is very sticky.
A bit of 2" SCH 40 PVC pipe, probably 6" of it. just buy a foot if you don't have some on hand.
2 screws/bolt for electrodes
Barbecue igniter w/ side burner
Electrical tape
Possibly Duct tape, I tend to use quite a bit of it.
Of course, the trusty hacksaw, IF a table saw is not available.
Part 1, Clean out plug and 4" female adaptor
Part 2, 4" pipe cut to the size you will need (discussed later)
Part 3, 4" x 2" adaptor (bell adaptor if possible, if not get one that is funneled... do NOT get a straight down 4 to 2.)
Part 4, 2" female and male adaptor
Part 5, 2.5" x 2" adaptor, possibly need 2.5" coupling also.
Part 6, 2.5" tennis ball barrel cut to size (discussed later)
Remember to be sure that all piping is SCH 40, or SCH 80 for the chamber.
(Optional, for pistol grip)

2 hose clamps, I used 6 1/16--7" I believe, and they were a bit big. Try the next size down.
Possibly more wires, if you do need more, buy some for 1000+ volts, this is what our igniter generates.

Assemble the parts dry so you are positive they will fit together. If they do not, get the necessary pressure rated pipe or adaptors so that they do. Once you are sure they will fit together, somehow find the volume of the chamber. Then, find the volume of your barrel. If the Chamber:Barrel(C:B) ratio is NOT .8:1, make sure it is. This is the optimal ratio for highest velocities. You will probably have to hack off a few inches of 4", the amount will depends on your adaptors.

After you have the right lengths of pipe, you can start to prime. Lay quite a bit of newspaper out, and wear rubber gloves if you don't want purple primer stain all over your hands. This stuff stains well, so don't wear good clothes! Prime 2 parts at a time, the parts to be glued. Prime it liberally, with primer all over each section to be glued (do not put it on parts that will not be glued, e.g. exposed sections of 4" or the barrel...) I think you know what I mean. so. After the primer has set for a minute or so, get out your PVC cement can. Apply the cement evenly over each part to be glued, and make sure it does not puddle. Do not skimp out though. Once you are sure it is all the way around, press them together with a quarter turn. This should stop any puddling. Continue with this procedure until you get to the detachable barrel part (male/female adaptor). Once you get to this point, make sure the female adaptor DOES NOT get any primer or glue into its threads. You want the female adaptor on the chamber side, by the way. After that, do the prime/cement procedure for the barrel. You have now completed most of the construction of your spud gun!

Take out your igniter. Attach the wires to it, and get the wires about 1/4" apart. Press the igniter, and watch the spark! That will ignite your flammable gasses. Now, get out your bolts. Sharpen the ends with a grinder, or a file and elbow grease.

Once you are done with that, drill the correct size hole into the chamber and put the bolts in. Attach the electrodes to the bolts with a bit of electrical tape and some duct tape, for good measure. DO NOT DEPRESS THE IGNITOR!!! Make sure that the chamber is properly vented of ALL solvent fumes, these WILL make the gun fire! And make sure you wait 24 hours before firing. Once it is vented (and 24 hours have passed, at least!), look into the chamber and press the igniter. You should see a small spark. If not, try to get the bolts closer together.

Once it is sparking, get your clean out plug and deodorant. Set up a target, or go to an open field. The target should be VERY strong (as in multiple layers of plywood) to stop the ball. Shove a tennis ball down your barrel with a broomstick or something. Spray a little in the chamber (probably a second or less), quickly screw on the clean out plug, and press the igniter. You should hear a resounding boom, and the tennis ball will have launched far away (if you shot it into a field). Now, this next part is optional, but I personally love it for the look of it.

If you bought the parts for the pistol grip, get your tee and your saw (and a vise if hacksaw). Cut the tee like I have in the picture of the chamber, and then glue the 1 1/2" pieces on. You do not need to prime, since there will be no pressure. After you are done, use the 5/8" bit to cut a hole where you want the igniter, on both side of the pipe. Then stick the igniter in, seal off the electricity from your hands with electrical tape, and clamp the grip on with the hose clamps. You may have to stick some newspaper in there to get it to be snug, but do whatever you need to do. And HAVE FUN!!! Safe fun, that is.
