rotating chambers seem a bit tricky...
if you think of it combines both the disadvantages of a conventional design as well as that of cartridges...

plus sealing the chambers and the barrel might be a bit of a problem...
I would rather not hold a 10X hybrid that might put scary burns on my body... :?
So we're making an M79 then
hmm sounds good... especially if it would make the same sound when loading as the original one

but yeah Image this would be pretty cool as well.... we could even copy its mechanism for rotating the chambers....

JSR can you design a cartridge that could use a wide range of ammo??

I am thinking of canister rounds filled with surplus flechetees

Agreed, personally I'd go for a linear mechanism.

The "projectile sealing" cartridge I had in mind would rely on a hard projecile, so it would have to be a proper sabot, maybe an HDPE machined cup.

Otherwise we could go with the piston cartridge and fire pretty much anything that fits in the barrel :)

Much though it would be entertaining to build a replica of the China Lake grenade launcher, I think we're still forgetting the fact we're talking about baseballs - a 3" bore.

I have severe doubts that a loading mechanism for a 3" cartridge would be of a practical size for a man portable cannon.

uhmm ammo is not specified in the guidelines... nor is calibre or muzzle energy so it can fire anything

30 - 40 mm seems ok IMO

Although pushing a baseball out of a well equipped 10x hybrid would be something to behold (can we say extreme pitching machine?), I feel it is absolutely impractical.

As POLAND_SPUD said, something along the lines of 30 to 40 mm would be more than ideal. It would provide enough size to feel "manly" while not being overwhelming at the same time, making rotating or pump actions more practical.

How about we start seeing some sketches of the cartridge layouts?

It depends on the facilities and materials at hand, anything I draw up with the assumption of building it myself will invariably feature binary adhesives in disproportionately large amounts.

that is a China Lake Grenade Launcher used in vietnam. basically a huge bore shotgun that shoots grenades. I wonder if we could make the cartridges to look like them. edit: dammit ive been beaten
Yeah, it's that important.

uhmmm so it seems we have to design the cartridge and a standalone device for fuelling and loading as well
EDIT
engrish :?

i have an idea for fueling. We could use the same valves they use on airsoft grenade shells and put those on the cartridge. Then get a green gas can and fill it with air and mix it in and there yu go portable fueling and firing.
Yeah, it's that important.
