Strafer CO2

I'm very proud of my lil' backyard ass-kicker, but as far as practicality in airsoft wars goes, beyond making an MG nest out of a compressor, its useless. I was wondering if it was safe to use regulated CO2 for a PVC strafer. I figured that as long as the parts that retain the pressure are metal , it would be safe, but when it comes to potential PVC shrapnel, I want to be sure.
If it would work, what costs might I expect to see if I do convert to CO2? And once I get a tank, how would I even fill it?
I don't paintball, and have never used this stuff before, so any feedback from anyone who actually knows what they're doing would be well appreciated.
