I am making an airtank to be worn on my back during an airsoft game for my vortex gun. It is made of 3 pieces of 2" sch40 pvc connected by tees and elbows. The thing will have a regulator and the pieces of 2" pipe will be about 2ft long and I will likely have it pumped up to 180psi and regulated to 90 psi. Will this design hold enough air to empty 2 magazines (about 3000 rounds in my gun) without having to refill?

Sorry to be negative but I doubt it. 3000 rounds is about 30 seconds for a vortex. If I recall correctly, Mr. Plow had a 5 lb. co2 tank that lasted 20,000 rounds or something like that. A 5 lb co2 tank holds LOTS of air because it's a liquid.

do some experimenting with a blow gun and an air compressor to see how long it takes to empty the tank

my 5 litre chamber lasts about 10 seconds. this will probably last the same, maybe a bit more.


its hard getting a big enough chamber. Try using 3" instead of 2"

3" couldn't be compressed very high, unless you used schedule 120! Aha!! You could order some schedule 120 pvc, in like 3" that could be pressurized to roughly 440 psi.

Here is a schedule 120 pressure chart from Harvel pvc.
So, if you want to make a backpack out of pvc, use schedule 80 or 120, not chedule 40. Personally, I would use 120, but it is expensive..

Hey man, if this was me making one out of pipe, i would make mine like this, they are all linked up threw brass niples and pressure rated hose. and each one is about 60cm long 3" wide. the hose at the bottem is the one that leads to your gun.

It would hold alot more air than 2".

sch 120 would weigh so much on your back.
40 would be bad enough, especially in a airsoft type game

Are you kidding me? PVC weighs nothing... Expecially if it is above your COG. Like, In real airsoft, one of my friends has a 45 lb vest full of gear... So, PVC would be nothing...

I've tried it, not in the same setup, but almost the same. I was also using 90 psi, which is what I feel same around, and a little more pipe. It lasts about 2 seconds before dropping below 60 psi.

I just mounted my 7 gallon air tank with a regulator in a backback and it works great. No need for my 15 sec long burst of air from 3 pieces of 2" pvc pipe.

And how much does a 7 gallon tank and a regulator cost, and how heavy is it?

You can get a 7 gallon tank for like about $20, and the regulator for about $15. You will also need a backback, hose, coupling, a few brass fittings and a barbed fitting. It weighs about 10-20 lbs, like a backpack full of books.
