pengun deluxe
Would you mind making a video with the sound (HD? ). I'm interested in seeing (hearing?) how it sounds. I'm considering buying a shock pump and making one... are there any cheap shock pumps on ebay or the like which you reccommend above others? Ones in retail stores here cost well over sixty bucks...
I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges.
Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

Sure, I'll throw in some other firings as well so you can compare. After work though ;P
The shock pump I would recommend is this one, mainly because you can independently depress the schrader stem, meaning no chance of accidental piloting when you disconnect the pump, plus the gauge goes to 400 psi as opposed to most other shockies that go to 300 or less.

Looks like I might have to get one. And build myself a pengun!

Even if you don't build a pengun, these days I find it hard to enjoy any small calibre project with anything less than 300 psi

I can't see our JSR even getting out of bed for anything less than 250psi

Just be careful when pumping larger volumes, it will heat up and cause the plastic parts to fail. To be specific... in my case, the pressure gauge literally blew off the pump and propelled itself into the wall... basically fragmented. I wasnt really looking at the pressure gauge but by the feel of it I'd say it happened around 20-25 bar. Volume of the chamber being filled was just over 60cc.jackssmirkingrevenge wrote:Sure, I'll throw in some other firings as well so you can compare. After work though ;P

So... I'd recommend you make one yourself out of metal parts because I just realized... for the cost of this plastic pump I could have built myself a decent stirrup pump.... minus the pressure gauge, they are more expensive then the entire pump Oh well.. I guess its worth it considering how much reliability you get.
Dont think I'm trying to scare you.. just trying to warn you. But hey if you Only need it for something like a sub 5cc tank at 400psi, I think that pump is a great low cost option
Yeah, I'm only going to be using it for small things. And if I use it for something larger, I'll keep the heat in mind. We don't need things falling apart at hundreds of PSI

Sounds like a "brown trouser" moment! Still, 60cc is a bit much, I rarely use shock pumps for more than 10cc.To be specific... in my case, the pressure gauge literally blew off the pump and propelled itself into the wall
For the benefit of Insomniac's noise concerns, here's a (fairly accurate in terms of audio capture) sound comparison with a cheap-o airsoft springer and my beloved HW45:

All shots were fired into a cloth backstop so there is no perceptible projectile impact noise, it's just the sound of the action and firing.

Thanks! I'm actually hoping for a bit of noise when I make one... it'll make it that much more satisfying to shoot.
The comparison with BB guns is a tad useless for an Australian though

Have a look here. My HW97 which is on that list sounds quieter than the HW45.Insomniac wrote:The comparison with BB guns is a tad useless for an Australian though

Made a new version, this time being more careful with hacking up the "donor" pen so I could use more parts from it, the downside being that chamber volume is greatly reduced and there's a corresponding reduction in power.

Looks quite nice!
Speaking of penguns... I just made a 'low pressure' pengun.... Why is it only for low pressure use, I hear you ask?
Well... I's held together wif 'ot glue now innit?
It's 'curing' in the fridge as we speak

Good luck with that though really, wihout high pressure, it doesn't really make sense. A 2" piston launcher will give you impressive power even at 20 psi, but with these little things that probably wouldn't push the projectile out of the barrel
Surely you can buy some Araldite or similar?

I can, but I want to try it NOW! I haven't yet bought a shock pump so it's low pressure use only.
I tried it a moment ago... it maintains structural integrity all the way up to 160psi, and I got about three or four successful pilots from it.. but now the piston ain't sealing right. I used a solid bit of rubber from an eraser, which I think is too soft.
Oh well... I'll stick the arse end of it in hot water to soften the glue and try again!
