bullet traps.
the actuall military kind is just like skin, same density, softness, and even electrical conductivity. For the purpous of stopping bullets, some made from normal gelatin is fine.

Have a look here.
Admittedly a rifle bullet screaming into the sand at mach 3 will disintegrate, but look how intact the pistol bullets remained! And you don't need more than 12 inches. Of sand.

That depends on what you're firing - I've seen tests where .50 BMG got through over 2 feet of sand.jackssmirkingrevenge wrote:And you don't need more than 12 inches of sand.
Given that spudgun projectiles are effectively very heavy pistol rounds - which seemed to perform best in the tests - I'd choose to play it on the safe side and use more than just 12" of sand.
Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?
Not to be cynical but how do you plan on crafting a titianium round, machining it down from round stock in a lathe yourself or are you going to send it off the be machined. The former being very difficult because of the metals inclination to work harden and form hard spots, as well as dealing with shavings and dust which are pyrophoric. the latter being expensive because a machinist has to deal with the same problems. not to mention that a 1 X12 inch rod is going to be in excess of $200.oo shipped. Also the weight of said object will be less that 400 grams if my quick mental calculation is correct.
Although the metal is very hard it does not have the weight to push it through, and for the cost involved is not a very good choice as an effective penetration round. A piece of steel bar stock could be had machined, the nose bored out and a piece of drill rod silver soldered in place and then ground to a point for substantialy less and would be harder than titanium and weight substantialy more. also if the tip breaks and new drill rod could be soldered in, angles could be changed and hardness varried.
my $0.02

hey what a coincidance.. today I made my own bullet trap from old newspapers and magazines and it works fine for marbles (they are intact, which is quite suprising given hte fact that they are capable of smashing bricks.... apparently it's easy to stop light weight ammo)
@ spudfarm try using neswpapers and magazines instead of books.... I don't really undesrtand what's the point in placing them behind the plate ? your projectile is going to deform

just got hit with this idea like a rock put a foam layer then add a footlong gap of scrunched newspaper and end it with a 3/4" plywood board you could also do what i use for my pellet gun trap i fill a pop can with sand trust me sand is one tough customer

This is one of the most powerful cannons on the forum, newspaper and plywood will do little as a bullet trap.pocket wrote:just got hit with this idea like a rock put a foam layer then add a footlong gap of scrunched newspaper and end it with a 3/4" plywood board you could also do what i use for my pellet gun trap i fill a pop can with sand trust me sand is one tough customer

Last I check he was going to shoot through 1/4" steel plate with a hardened projectile that wont deform on impact...it will go through your bullet trap like it was paper.*pocket wrote:it stops a .22 so the foam slows it down and makes it into a tumbling efect then the newspaper grip into it while the ply wood does the final stopping and the sand is there just in case anything happens
*Well not really, but I doubt it will be very effective.

I think that if you built a sand trap/box, thats 12x12x12 that you would be fine. You could also just leave out one of the sides, and put something like cardboard there to hold the sand. Of coarse, you would then replace the cardboard when you were done... and you might want to put a little bucket beneath it to catch sand that comes out of the entrence.
His bullet trap is mostly (news)paper!MrCrowley wrote:it will go through your bullet trap like it was paper.
Although the design might be able to stop a .22, the results with anything else are entirely dependent on what is being fired.
Densely packed newspaper could probably do the job, but scrunched newspaper wouldn't do much at all.
If you want to shove as much newspaper into a space as possible, then just pack it in as flat sheets - scrunching it leaves air pockets.

if i was to make a bullet trap, i would just fill a cardboard box with newspaper and/or sand.....

Well, wet/damp sand is probably the best option of anything.ALIHISGREAT wrote:if i was to make a bullet trap, i would just fill a cardboard box with newspaper and/or sand.....
It's obviously denser and more cohesive than plain sand, both of which will help reduce the distance in which the round will stop.
Clay might also be a decent option, although that would be more costly.
