Just today I heard that there are gunpowder powered nailers... essentially a regular cartridge with a nail rather than a slug. Apparently used for some of that really really hard wood. I'm not sure, I just heard it from someone.

Yeah I know there are combustion nail-guns but my question was, "what kind of nail-gun (size and type) can achieve such velocities?" Because in my opinion they could be used for very high power (read supersonic) spudguns.

I'm pretty sure this Is what you're looking for. The nail guns that reach those velocities are powered by gunpowder, which isn't really appropriate for this forum.

The "combustion" nail guns that I know of use .22 cartridges with no slugs at all, blanks. The nails come in a strip for this type of nailer. I also see the gas cylinders in my local hardware stores, but have no experience with them.

There are in fact two types of combustion nailers, one that is very similar to a combustion spudgun, a gas cylinders squirts gas into the chamber, a spark plug ignites the mixture pushing the piston that drives the nail into the material to be fixed.
The other one uses .22 blanks and the projectile itself is the nail.

i just look them up and they have a bb in them to start a hole in steel or concrete, porbly wasn't a good idea to put em in a fire
