And when we were kids we had to walk to and from school through 2 feet of snow up hill both ways in bare feet! :bigsmurf:POLAND_SPUD wrote: Or perhaps youngsters these days are not the same people we were ?

We had this similar discussion at work last week. We were asking what has changed, as these days (compared to 10 years ago) there is no one working overtime developing their own projects in the workshops and inventing new products.
Part of the conclusion was the generational change. Many of the long time employees had lost their jobs in the financial crisis, and they have now been replaced almost completely with recent graduates.
This generation has grown up with being able to buy things from shops when they want, and has lead to a belief that things ONLY come from shops. It doesn't occur to them that they are probably capable of making it themselves.

Funny, I only stopped by here after a year to see if anyone was still around as I was throwing out some half-finished pneumatic builds that were cluttering the workshop.
The political climate here makes builds, whether pneumatic or hybrid pretty much impossible. For those Stateside, imagine all your TV channels were Fox and all the newspapers were owned and edited by Fox too. A teenager posting on Facebook about his pubescent plans for Jihad rates a full blown raid by the Federal and State police including guys in HAZMAT and EOD gear. It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad so any thoughts about loud bangs in the shed or backyard are way out the question.
On the brighter side one of the reasons I got into CNC was through spudding. I now have an upgraded mill as well as a CNC laser cutter so have turned my time to fine woodwork like jewel boxes and guitar bodes.
For those who can still spud, enjoy. Might stop by again in a year or two.

Like I sang in the song...
I'm a spudfiler baby!
I'm a patato-cannon man!
'till the day I'm dying I will keep them taters flying 'cause I can!
Not a day goes by without me thinking about spudding...
Couple of days ago I upgraded Lil'Shat from 8mm to .50..
Spudding ain't dead.
This is just SF minus JSR......
Leuk dat je even langs komt Psy!

I gotta admit not a day goes by me either without thinking to myself "that would be awesome traveling at 700fps"...
I just can't work on any projects at the moment... Doesn't stop me from scheming though... At this very moment I've got a povray render going on a project I want to build later this year.
I also keep my website running, of which a large portion is spudding related, although I'll be delving further into amateur radio once I get my license... Still have a couple of pages on hybrid and combustion fueling which have been multi-year spanning projects...
We just need a few more prolific builders on the site.

I don't think that is the cause, the entire trend is much to recent. Many activities are seeing significant drops, everything from spudding to kids soccer. This has only been happening over the last couple of years, no more than five. I think the most likely culprit, at least the one that correlates the best, is the combination of smart phones and social media.ToasT wrote:This generation has grown up with being able to buy things from shops when they want, and has lead to a belief that things ONLY come from shops. Now excuse why I go chase some kids off my lawn. :violent3:

Another thing I think is contributing to the lack of posts is that a lot of my generation has gone on to college and other things that take priority over spudding. I'm home for the summer now so I'm back to plinking again. But a lot of us younger guys are nowhere to be found anymore...
Also like what was said earlier, I think people might be afraid to post something that isn't revolutionary... Piston valves and even hammer valves have become run of the mill so they are hardly worth posting.
I too wonder what has happened to JSR... Maybe Canada got the best of him.

Maybe he married a HUGE Russian woman with 6 kids. Instead of building spud guns, he spends his days washing diapers and giving her pedicures....UGH.Gun Freak wrote:I too wonder what has happened to JSR... Maybe Canada got the best of him.

Just stumbeld upon it.
Guess it's not so dead

Children are the future

That tourch gun is awesome!!!
I tinker with parts almost every day working on barrel designs etc. but often I don't feel like what I've made justifies a post because so much has been seen before. (Oh look, another blow through bolt semiauto yay...)
I tend not to post too much on other people's stuff unless it is something impressive as I worry about feeding any information to someone who thinks a coke bottle is a great pressure chamber for their ball valve gun.
It's hard to come up with brandnew designs these days - I've just posted an electro pneumatic number under the pneu cannon database. It's not in any way revolutionary but there aren't many solenoid driven guns on the site. Maybe if there was a thread where the group could discuss new ideas for the next generation valve or repeating combustion as a community we could work towards something. As far as I can see the latest valve development was the qdv (all props to technician) but that valve despite good opening times is pretty much a one shot wonder, I'm toying with a self closing version at the moment but I haven't posted anything because it's not finished.
For the site to have good traffic maybe it also needs a purpose... Or should I say a more specific purpose i.e. Let's all work to design an easy to make blah blah blah valve / feeding / whtever mechanism. Rather than; lets all work on making things that shoot things and post pictures of them after they are done. Seems to me that there are enough smart people on this sight that as a team they could design something totally original.
Just a thought.

I come around here every few weeks or so but I haven't built anything spudding related in eons. Initially, I was driven to spudding due to my inability to own actual firearms due to my status as a minor.
Ever since I turned 18, I've been shifting most of my focus towards my undergraduate studies as a mechanical engineering major, as well as firearms, chasing women, partying etc, leaving little to no room for the hobby. However, I've recently purchased a lathe and plan to complete some half finished builds this summer.

Yeah, it's that important.
