I was in London over the weekend and one of the definite highlights was a visit to the Imperial War Museum. One of my favourite exhibits by far was the Jagdpanther, mostly because it still carries the scars of the combat which knocked it out of action. The photos speak for themselves

That's actually not a lot of armor compared to today's vehicles.
By the way, the topic title can be construed in a totally different way. It actually makes sense, too...

I thought that todays vehicles had less armour because of the highly slanted surfaces.

@JSR: Cool tour; did they indicate what weapon did the deed here? Holes look 80-100mm-ish.

Sorry about that. How much damage was on the other side of the turret? That looks to be about 2" armor plate, so I'd imagine the shrapnel must have been pretty damaging.
Nice double entendre in the thread title.

Stupid quote of the now:
joestue "The chamber is rated to 100 psi, it don't say that on the side, but the 2 inch stuff is rated to 300, so by analogy..."
"only the last two feet hear the end is black cellular core"
"I'm taking it to 300 psi"

Nice pictures JSR, I would hate to have been the operators of that tank...[/quote]
Jack, were you by any chance clambering all over it to get that last picture
Looks like you'd have had to be on the engine looking through the hatch eh?

Great, mostly because I was there with a lady friendSticky_Tape wrote:how did you like your trip to London?
The side armour is fairly thin compared to the frontal armour that's more than double the thickness and at a steeper angle. That's actually not a lot of armor compared to today's vehicles.
75mm, from one of these at 50 yards range (urban combat apparently) - the tank in question was lucky enough to meet it from the side, otherwise it would have been a British tank in a German museum on display. A single round from the Jagdpanther's '88 would have made a mess of the Cromwell from 2,000 yards away, let alone at that range.did they indicate what weapon did the deed here? Only noticed it after believe it or notNice double entendre in the thread title

Nope, they cut ruddy big holes in the armour on the other side to show the internals - see teh moar fotoes!
I have many more photos from the museum, might upload a little "tour" if I have time

Yeah those German 88s were nasty mothers. It was also the standard main gun on the Nazi Tiger IIs.jackssmirkingrevenge wrote:75mm, from one of these at 50 yards range (urban combat apparently) - the tank in question was lucky enough to meet it from the side, otherwise it would have been a British tank in a German museum on display.
