That's actually not a lot of armor compared to today's vehicles.
By the way, the topic title can be construed in a totally different way. It actually makes sense, too...

I thought that todays vehicles had less armour because of the highly slanted surfaces.

i do dream of penetrating something like that. but i fear for the fact that the gun might be taken away by the Government relatively soon after.....

Much MORE armour, much better armour, slanted surfaces, active armour, invisible force field...[
really....no, not REALLY... 8) ] not yet anyway...
@JSR: Cool tour; did they indicate what weapon did the deed here? Holes look 80-100mm-ish.

Sorry about that. How much damage was on the other side of the turret? That looks to be about 2" armor plate, so I'd imagine the shrapnel must have been pretty damaging.
Nice double entendre in the thread title.

Jack, were you by any chance clambering all over it to get that last picture
Looks like you'd have had to be on the engine looking through the hatch eh?

Great, mostly because I was there with a lady friend
That's actually not a lot of armor compared to today's vehicles.
The side armour is fairly thin compared to the frontal armour that's more than double the thickness and at a steeper angle.

75mm, from one of
these at 50 yards range (urban combat apparently) - the tank in question was lucky enough to meet it from the side, otherwise it would have been a British tank in a German museum on display. A single round from the Jagdpanther's '88 would have made a mess of the Cromwell from 2,000 yards away, let alone at that range.
Nice double entendre in the thread title
Only noticed it after believe it or not
Jack, were you by any chance clambering all over it to get that last picture
Nope, they cut ruddy big holes in the armour on the other side to show the internals -
see teh moar fotoes!
I have many more photos from the museum, might upload a little "tour" if I have time

Yeah those German 88s were nasty mothers. It was also the standard main gun on the
Nazi Tiger IIs.

Indeed, and you'd think it would have been enough for those megalomaniacal Nazis,
but noooo! *sigh* hehe
