I have designed cheap and pretty powerful igniter which can give about 2cm sparks. Uses 9v battery which lasts about 1 hour non stop operation. Using just to ignite the gas it would be enough for ~6000 shots for one battery.
I used scrap parts so it costed nothing, usually it would cost about 3 $ if you wound HV transformer yourself... It is also possible to use car ignition coil.
The circuit theoretically has infinite lifetime, in reality it will last manny times longer than pjezo (BBQ) igniters.
It is perfect for Spud Gun. It gives about 2cm sparks, but if you use better HV transformer it is possible to get about 7cm sparks.

Hmm... Sorry, I haven't seen it... But still... Its finished version, low price, few parts which can be founded in TV or even old tube radio. And if you use no PCB and conect everything just one lead to another it can be fitted in the spud gun handle. Those made of whole flyback transformer has continuous spark and are quite large... And as I said, maybe it could be useful for somebody. I was searching google pretty long time and havent found anything as simple as mine's.
I think I'll improve my circuit later with SMD's to make it as little as possible and apply the improved circuit here to readers' judge.

Seems like a buzz coil (battery, relay, ignition cap and coil) would be simpler.

Looks very nice. I tried making one of those with this schematic:
But I could get the 1k to 200k transformer. Is there a way I could make my self the transformer?
It's realy hard to make such transformer, because the voltage will be pretty high and if done not properly transformer will burn after few sparks (if you have decided to make one use good insulation and when you're done pot the transformer into wax). It's viser to use two transformers and charge cap.
BTW plans 1 and 2 are actually prototipes of mines, but they use 555 timers instead of my two transistor oscilator. Also the first plan is pretty expensive in my country, because it requires a lot of HV diodes and caps which are really expensive.
I think I will apply the whole plan with videos, how to make a good ignitor. There I will shown how to make transformers and other esential parts... Because as I see there are some interested people.

But, if you have an operation like that, I would like someone with brains, and without hydrogen peroxide bleached hair.
I like the ignitor, however i'm not going to do anything in the combustion / hybrid direction.
I think you're one of the few members that don't kick up a dead post, but contribute something usefull as their first action

Yes but in packaging terms its even worse than a stun gun style spark generator.

You can't make anything more simple and cheap than those gas ignition things.
They're a battery -> oscillator -> capacitor -> solid state switch -> HV coil.
Heck I've made one and there's no simpler way of doing it.
