I just went down to my local plumbing store and I was looking around for some copper piping and one of the workers asked me if they could help. I told them I was building a spud gun. Then the stupid old man refused to sell me anything because he told me they were illegal and blah blah.
I have been into that store many times and had a chat with the workers about spud guns, and they were happy to help me. I have even been at some of the local parks shooting my cannons and everyone thinks it is really cool. But now this old man wont let me buy anything and it is the only place I can buy parts from locally.
Now I have already searched this and there is not really any hard evidence on this site or any other website that spud guns are illegal in New Zealand. I have read the Firearms Act thing and it says that "less powerful air cannons are not be classed as firearms", other than that it doesn't say anything about shooting potatoes into the air.
So many people have told me that is illegal and so many have told me that it is not. So does anyone actually know the rules when it comes to pneumatic cannons in NZ (I need evidence)? Because I would really like to march back into that shop and present that old man with a document that shows that it is not illegal. I'm sure if I had proof he would let me buy from the shop.
Anyone got any info? Or a link, believe me I have searched these forums but there is only information for other countries.

One important life lesson is never to speak more than what's necessary. The excess garbage can get you in trouble.
Should've asked for what you needed and went on your merry way.

I wouldn't say he's stupid id say it's contreverseal.
Just go there again and get your parts without talking to the old man.
Also just have your dad get the parts.

Yea I am gonna go back in, I'll go on a Saturday and hopefully he wont be working. If that doesn't work then i will try and buy all the parts one by one, so it wont look like im building a spud gun.
Na the old man isnt stupid, I just dont like him because I have told everyone what I'm building and he is the only one that has ever stopped me from buying stuff.
Im gonna go into the police station and ask them tomorrow.
Edit: I just thought of the ultimate excuse. I'll tell him im building a water gun, no one can tell me that those are illegal.

dude you have rights he has to sell you the parts you need. he cant tell you you cant buy parts cause your building a spud gun. i tell everyone im building a gun and if people dont sell me the parts i need. i would tell them about my rights and i mention that im not gana shoot it and i tell them ill call the cops if they dont sell me the parts.
that would probably work cause if the laws are the same in NZ if you call the cops you can tell them that your gana build a gun but tell them that there is no harm in BUILDING A GUN there is only harm is you SHOOT THE GUN. and i should work also.
thats just my opinion but i wouldnt do it it creates a big scene
good luck!

That theory is somewhat flawed specalist. The possession of some itmes is illegal. Such as thermonuclear warheads. I could tell the cops im gonna build a nuke but not shoot it and they'd still arrest me.

I'm not sure about the way things work over there, but here in the US any store can refuse to sell you anything for any reason they want.
The old man is just trying to keep you out of trouble. Go talk to the police, see what they say.

Yes, I am the guy that owns & operates SpudFiles (along with our extremely helpful moderators).
Somebody tell me mom thatOne important life lesson is never to speak more than what's necessary. The excess garbage can get you in trouble.

Make sure you take a cop with you when you get to tell the guy they're legal (assuming they are).
