Not exactly on topic (and feel free to remove if you feel like it, jrrdw) but an idea for a future competition would be to try and shoot a fragile projectile (an egg) the furtherest distance; similar to those school projects of designing a contraption so that an egg can be dropped from a certain height without breaking (like a small container and parachute).
The difference being you're trying to make the egg survive the launch and not the impact. But what would be good about a competition like this is the more you add to support the egg from extreme forces, the heavier or less aerodynamic the egg becomes.

How do you evaluate it reliably though?MrCrowley wrote:the furtherest distance
JSR who had considered the idea previously wrote:I was contemplating sponsoring a contest for furthest distance but sadly, independently verifying claims would be a nightmare.

The only way would be having the person walk out the distance on camera straight after the shot, I guess. We need a 'control' to get an idea how far one could launch an egg with minimal protection and an average cannon. I'm not sure if you could get one to go much further than 150m without breaking it. Though, I haven't really put a whole lot of thought in to the idea.

I've had good luck with low pressure, large chamber, long barrel, sabot, and high flow valve. You can launch them far I've exceeded 100 yards. Exact distance unknown. It landed on the roof somewhere. Launched 100 yards from the building.

... but then a dishonest member could chose to hide another projectile at a set distance, heck you could even get away with firing a blank shot. Not saying that this forum is populated by a bunch of cheats but you get my drift.MrCrowley wrote:The only way would be having the person walk out the distance on camera straight after the shot, I guess.
Speaking of distance shots *cough*wehaventforgottentheminiboy*cough*
presumably it didn't survive the impact what calibre and what sabot? the famous soda bottle and foam?I've exceeded 100 yards

If someone goes through the rigmarole of designing a protection sabot that could realistically allow the egg to survive the launch and achieve a decent range only to fake the whole thing with a hidden egg to win a competition with the sole prize being boasting rights, let them have it.jackssmirkingrevenge wrote:... but then a dishonest member could chose to hide another projectile at a set distance, heck you could even get away with firing a blank shot. Wouldn't it be great to make everyone think we fired an egg 150m? That'd show Spudfiles. They'd think we launched an egg 150m and they'd be all afraid
We actually tried to fix the ATV last time we were up there but it's not even getting power from the battery and we can't work out why. There's talk of getting someone in to fix it but the guy wants $300 just to look at it and figure out what's wrong with it. I can of course still launch the MiniBoy, but without the ATV there'll be no recovery chance; which goes against LeMaudit's wishes.jackssmirkingrevenge wrote:Speaking of distance shots *cough* wehaventforgottentheminiboy*cough*
