We should have contests with themes like (Practical Full Autos) (Highest Velocity) (Viability in an apocalypse) (Most efficiant Design) (first member to build a caselman :P )and then winner should get featured on the home page.

SF will never be dead unless I quit... and that's not happening :D

Yes it does get slower/busier. If anyone gets connection troubles, please let me know. My host had some scheduled maintenance that would cause the described issues about ~1 week ago.

As far as the "growing up with SF" thing goes, it can not be anymore true. Lots of the "hardcore" users were younger when SF started and were/have been around many years. But yes when you start getting older, things change a bit.

Example, instead of planning and spending on a new cannon, I'm planning on things in my yard/house and spending lots of $ on that.

You can look forward to however, this will be the first season in my new house with my yard cleaned up. I can finally shoot at home!

I started here when I was 13, I'm now 24. I've never had my own place to properly shoot before! But one thing I do know for sure is... there are ups and downs. That's why even moderators get added/removed over time, because the same thing happens to even mods.
Yes, I am the guy that owns & operates SpudFiles (along with our extremely helpful moderators).

that's totally true

also I partly agree with SB15
we have reached a point where we achieved almost everything that can be easily achieved.. and we know that we could achieve more but it would be easier to just use solid propellants

I mean, solid propellant, and exotic ammo is something worth discussing, why cant we add that to the forums?

Well for starters it could attract the wrong crowd and end up forcing the site to go offline due to either legal or governmental pressure. But it also wouldn't be very safe.

I think this hobby is more than just shooting ridiculous projectiles at ridiculous velocities, a lot of it is about how we achieve it :)

Because in most countries creating an unlicensed exotic firing, solid propellant based launcher will get you locked away for a couple of years.
You can easily go so over the top with solid propellant too, you are no longer just putting yourself in danger by putting 200 psi in a PVC pipe with a bike pump, you're putting in 5000.
I'd say the forum would last about a week before it would get shut down if we did have that kind of discussion here,

edit: goddamn it, beaten to it

This thread has inspired me :D

Soon I will be in the position to buy my first property. It will surely have a space to set up shop... I can't wait to start on the most powerful civilian made spud gun shortly thereafter.

Energetics... HE... has all been discussed before. Those of us who know, know. Chat is there for a reason - it will never fly on a public forum or else SF will suffer the same fate as all the other sites in years past as the "k3wls" flock towards SF with little experience and end up like all the other fingler-less fools that cause it to get it shut down.

Another thing that sort of makes this hobby hard to stay "enthused" about. I will start first off with another one of my hobbies - biking. It's EASY to find plenty of people to bike with, in fact there are probably well over 100 riders involved in the same style of biking (downhill, freeride) within a 20 mile radius of me. That makes it an easy sport to stay involved with as people call you up, or you call them up to go for a ride.

Fast forward to spud gun shooting. I guess it's fair to say a majority of us on here are content with pneumatic creations in the compressor PSI range. They are fun. But there are also some of us on here addicted to pure kinetic energy. Achieving this on any level requires special equipment. Whether it's burst discs hybrids, piston hybrids, or scuba tank fed pneumatics - they ALL require a long time to set up, and shoot. My last two guns in particular require special firing ranges, trailers, and at least 2 or three additional people along with a 20A power supply to feed the compressor. This requires a WHOLE day of planning and organization to shoot. Needless to say I get to shoot my guns about 1 or 2 days a year. Throw in the high speed filming, video editing, target acquisition, and a lot more that I don't even feel like getting into - it's no longer a hobby that you can just meander into - it's a serious commitment.

For those that have seen mine, SpudFarms, DYI's, that gigantic scuba tank hybrid with a 50 foot barrel (his name escapes me at the moment), and lest we not forget - Dhall's VERA, it's a serious commitment to power these things. We aren't really in it for the kicks and giggles that we were when we first glued together PVC from home depot/Lowes/Menards/Canadian tire/whatever big box store you go to - it's a quest towards the limits of what we can make, and how fast/much power we can deliver. It's a tiring journey that can wear you out for a year, maybe 5.

But one things for sure - most of us that may be dormant aren't done - we're just resting up for the next big one 8)

Actually we did have someone make a plasma gun quite a while ago, as far as I read it turned out quite well, albeit quite large: http://www.spudfiles.com/forums/t-t13449.html

I found space constraints are the biggest factor in my vacation from spudding, especially for someone who loves to make the biggest bang possible. I can confidently assure you that I will be back when space and time allow though!

Also still here... lurking mostly.

I used to have time and no money. Now I have money and no time. As long as spudfiles remains running I'll still be here, but this in particular isn't a very productive time in my life.

It's been nothing put lurking for the past few months with me too.
I'm in a similar situation as Fnord;
I used to have time and no money, but now, instead of having money and no time, I have no time and no money.
