how incompetent is your hardware store?

well my hardware store is stupid they have nothing you ever need and they follow me like a hawk even though ive never stolen any thing from them... so how stupid is your hardware store?

Haha mine does the same to me, it's like they have nothing better to do, and just because i'm a teenager buying spray paint and plumbing supplies.

Mine also rejected me when I asked to work there part time, they said "You have more then enough knowledge to work here, but the truth is the customers want to be served by older men who look experienced."

Then I go down there a week or two later and there's this girl from my school working there, and she's younger then me and knows nothing about anything.

According to her they hired her because customers have now changed their minds and would like to get served by young girls who are ncie and friendly.

I askes for a schrader valve at HD. The guy gave me a ball valve.

Sounds exactly like my local hardware store.. Well there's two actually, one is decent but the other is way overpriced and they never have what I need.

Not sure about how incompetent they are as they act like total arses, so I just avoid them. One of the employees was always friendly towards me, one day I returned two of their way overpriced ball valves and since then she gives me a cold stare every time I walk in.

Yeah the guys at my hardware store follow me around all the time, usually i go in there just to look around, see if they have anything of interest and one of them allways come's up to me and says " Can i help you with anything?" and then when i say no im just loooking and they keep following me around.

Although once when i made my first pneumatic, one of the guys there helped me pic all the parts and made sure it all fit together

I'd say my local hardware is great, pipe cut to length, fittings are always in stock, their cheaper than Lowes or Home Depot, and they even make deliveries, I wouldn't be building spud guns without them.

home depot here was fine (empoyees able to find things for me, large stock, cheap) till they rearanaged everything, and now i can't find anything, and even the employees don't know where stuff is cause everything has been moved around.

Ive found that the workers in smaller stores are way more helpful than those in big stores like Mitre10. At the big hardware stores it seams that they only care about being cheaper than other hardware stores. With smaller stores the people know what your talking about and if they dont have what you need they can help you get it.

My lowes is fine, but a lot of the people that work there, shouldn't be working there.
But there are a select few employees I respect.

That's really the same as mine.They do cut pipes to the correct lenghts and they do have in stock all of the fittings and valves you need.THey can also be Arses.
They ask me when i'm in the bathroom fittings section "What are you doing with all this stuff" and i just reply "I'm making a homemade airgun which can go through wood and can be lethal at 60m" They just go, "Well good luck with that, son". and think that im joking and that I'm crazy so they act nice.

But they can be extremely incompetent at times.VERY incompetent. .

I asked for a neoprene gasket once, they gave me a metal washer.

There is one great guy there called Chris, he didn't help me build the spudguns, I just let him knew what I was doing and he was very intrested, I give him updates from time to time.

bunnings is good. mainly because its employees are all friends of my dads. ( my dads an all round handy man and he helps me out alot also).

My local hardware store has no PCV plumbing at all. Not the next one, either or the next one again. But compared to here, in Switzerland, my home country Denmark is much worse: More expensive (more expensive than Switzerland; it ought to be impossible but no!). The marked in Denmark has degenerated into a consumer rubbish segment (with a small selection of useful and/or quality items, and loads of junk), and a professional segment where all the nice things are, but unfortunately they don´t give a d... about private customers. Some don´t event sell to them.

So I get my tools and some parts in the hardware stores or the professional tool stores, which are all great. If you need 8 5 x 16 mm allen head stainless steel screws, they will simply get them out of their drawers.. in Denmark, that was 15 years ago.

I get pipe and fittings at a place selling koi fish and pond equipment, and I get all the exotic stuff at a technical supply store. They have every air fitting and every O and X ring imaginable. But those tho places are 50 and 10 km out of town, respectively, and in different directions... I guess half the time I spent with spud guns are going back and forth for a single o-ring or whatever (yes I could splatter everything with epoxy instead but I´m turning into a Swiss techno-snob....)
