pvc or abs whats safer
I just built a cannon out of abs schedule 40 pipe haven't fired it yet the guys at the hardware store said that cellular core is all they use4 spud guns i looked up on the internet and there is allot of info but it seems to be a toss up between pvc and abs. pvc shatters when struck with a hammer abs only bends and breaks in half on paper it makes sense that the abs pope would absorb more shock from the shock of ignition do to its core acting as tiny absorbers also pvc deuterates in the sun more than abs so the question is what is safer abs or pvc

Short answer: ABS for combustions, NSF-PW PVC for pneumatics.
Long answer: This topic has been discussed probably 100+ times on this forum, and a very simple search would have saved both you and I a fair bit of time. Search next time, please.

Do yourself a favor, dont ask the idiots at the hardware store anything.
Both pvc and abs are resonably safe for your average cumbustion.

It depends who you talk to you. But generally you are right, one time i got pressure pipe and they couldn't tell me its pressure rating even though it was on the pipe... But the guys here on spudfiles helped me out with that.mopherman wrote:Do yourself a favor, dont ask the idiots at the hardware store anything.

But the same shop, one guy gave me the parts for an aerosol combustion cannons and he told me "We always keep one of these in the car just in case"

please only ask the idiot morpherman, apparently he knows everything.
morpherman,
why would you be dumb enough to make such a broad statement like that? i would guess you are one of the guys that wrote everything about everything. you could probably tell us a lot about d!psh!its.

I am not claiming to know everything. All I'm saying is that the hardware store employees generaly have zero knowledge of spudguns. there have been explosions because "the guy at the store told me it was pressure rated"silverdooty wrote:please only ask the idiot morpherman, apparently he knows everything.

It depends where you go like i just said. Often those big chain stores hire anyone to work there. But often those small local stores know exactly what they are talking about in terms of information about pipes and ratings and stuff. For example, i went to this one small local shop, gave them a list of what i wanted, they guy walked to the exact place where they were, quickly found the items, and gave them to me, he even gave me the items i didn't know the name for, i just described them.silverdooty wrote:please only ask the idiot morpherman, apparently he knows everything.

ABS is a hell of alot stronger the PVC, ABS doesn't shadder into a million sharp pieces of plastic like PVC, i use sch 40 PVC because where i live u can't buy ABS.
So use ABS, its ment to be great for combustion cannons.

Pressure solid wall ABS is the best to use for pneumatics because if it fails it splits instead of shatters, except its hard to get

abs schedule 40 pipe... is that not presure rated ABS? Cause if it is that is about the best thing you can use to make a spud gun... besides metal... or like SCH120
trying to decide on a new project, probably something small.
Schedule is wall thickness not pressure rating, you can buy pressure rated ABS which will have a schedule.super spuder wrote:abs schedule 40 pipe... is that not presure rated ABS? Cause if it is that is about the best thing you can use to make a spud gun... besides metal... or like SCH120

I would say pressure rated abs is much better than pressure rated pvc. But it is much rarer, and much more expensive. It doesn't shatter, it splits.

ABS is safer but use PVC
