However, if you just cement a 6-12" section near the base of the barrel, that will be absolutely fine - that's sufficently more than any fitting would do.

They had 2.5" conduit pvc at my Lowes which I used for a barrel on my piston cannon. They had no reducers, so I ghetto fitted it with a 1.5"x2" threaded bushing without a hex and glued it into the barrel. It worked quite well for tennis-balls.
