I'm with you Carl. This is a great "pushing the state-of-the-art" example but far out of reach for a vast majority of spudders. The high X feature of this gun alone puts it in industrial shop capability only, on several levels.

Just saw this. Thats not a spud gun by any means. Thats a compressed gas powered, smooth bore firearm. Impressive to say the least, but you can't exactly play with that anywhere besides a firing range or the great planes of Mars. If he rifled that barrel and added a scope, it looks like it could rival a .50cal sniper rifle!!

It's not compressed gas powered, it uses combustion of compressed gases. I.E an explosion. This is know as a hybrid in spudding terms. (Don't confuse with a combustion gun, which only uses 1atm mix, just look it up in the SpudWiki if confused).

He also doesn't live in America, so he can shoot on, or near his property IIRC. In terms of power, it already does rival a .50cal sniper. In terms of accuracy, efficiency, usability etc, it doesn't.

Bleeding Buddha!

I don't know the legalities in Sweden, but over here in the Land Of The Costly, that thing CERTAINLY falls into the definition of a Class III Destructive Device. You COULD get a license, but it'd cost you $300 a year, assuming you have a squeaky clean record....
In any event, you'd have to classify it as an experimental firearm.

On a more personal note:

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!

Do you have pics of the end of the dumpster?

I think it is constructive, still, a little more tact could have been used XD.
What impresses us on these forums is the overall capability of certain members to do quite impressive stuff with a little effort ^^. The fun factor for larda's hybrid is by a huge margin far superior to anyother gun in these forums.

We've seen worse, you might have to try a little harder. How about explaining what brings someone with big bore powderburning experience to the somewhat less exciting yet nonetheless entertaining world of PVC and flaming potatoes :D

I agree with CpTn_lAw's point, there is a certain amount of effort and consequent satisfaction with utilising limited facilities and materials, what you describe as laziness is not necessarily the easy way out.

Sooo then Camosoul....when do you plan to show your cannon creation? You can even use your "industrial machinery" if you want...in fact, I personally encourage you to do so....

It's on a rough par with .338 Lapua... at a pre compression of 100x, under half of it's operating capacity, and with projectiles of a mass that limits the energy they can absorb.

At the full 225x limit (as far as I am aware, not yet used), it's muzzle energy could challenge a .50 BMG rifle, being in the realm of 12,000 ft-lbs.
I do notice that significant attention was paid to overbuilding the combustion chamber, but little concern seems to exist for the barrel's breach end. Does it not have to contain a similar pressure as the projectile is initially encountered by the pressure wave?
The immediate breech end is almost as heavily built as the chamber, and by the time it has tapered down to the size it will be for most of it's length, the pressure that's being applied has considerably dropped.
It is within the limits that could be considered safe, but I wouldn't personally want to be pushing it much further.

Camosoul, let's break down your post:

First off: Muzzle energy VS .50 BMG

.50 BMG
The M2 .50 machine gun fires a 720 grain FMJ ball round at ~2400fps, with a ME of ~12,600ft-lbs.

Lardas' hybrid fired a 256.177 grain projectile at 3061fps.
Someone wanna do the math to get ME on Lardas' hybrid for me?

Second, while "industrial machinery" isn't completely out of reach for some of us, it is still a major investment, even if you are lucky enough to find used machines. My Father, in fact, is reconditioning my Grandfather's old metal lathe. However, the cost of stock is prohibitive for most of the people on this site. Lardas, as was stated earlier, was extremely fortunate in acquiring his materials.

Third, your understanding of the current political climate surrounding gun control is somewhat off. Gun control advocates in the U.S. legislature don't have anywhere near the support they'd need to pass laws as sweeping as the U.K. or Australia. In fact, after the latest rounds of Supreme Court rulings, it will be extremely hard to pass any kind of gun control legislation at all. Also, many of the legislators who passed the last "assault weapons" ban now acknowledge that it was useless and did nothing to deter crime and was simply a waste of paper. As things stand now, I don't believe there is a single Republican who will vote for any gun control measure beyond adding mental health to background checks, and the Democrats are broadly split on the matter. Also, the Republicans still have enough seats in the Senate to filibuster. So getting a majority on gun control is going to be next to impossible, if they can even get a vote.

Considering that this is very definitely NOT a firearms site, I'll restrict myself from the usual name-calling that inevitably ensues on such during gun-control discussions. :D

EDIT, I just realized, I got the info from Larda's 100x plastic slug shot. Hey, Larda, do you have that info for one of your hardened steel slugs, like the one from your plate video?

That would be his 16.6 gram projectile at 933 m/s?
About 5350 ft-lbs.

But again, that's at a 100x mix. This thing should be capable of 225x - big difference.
Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?

I am surprised no one started chanting "lead slugs! Lead slugs!" yet. seriously, this is the 14th page of the possibly the most amazing gun on this site, and no one has demanded lead slugs yet. So I suppose I will.
