Friction seals/detent systems limit projectile choices too much to fit the model of what a spudgun is - A device capable of launching whatever the heck you can fit in the barrel at high speed. As such, those systems will never be practical for anything other than small scale experimental launchers.

I've seemed to fixed all the kinks, I had problems with the piston bouncing and damaging the sealing face.

edit: Oh and yes, the target is smoking after that shot

This should make for some nice high speed footage, surely you can come up with something better than that pineapple shot... or is the camera still too precious to be risked close-up?

I actually do have to prepare myself mentally for shots like that haha. I was very close to the target, hadn't tested a 10x mix before, had only fired a projectile at 5x before that and wasn't sure what the projectile would do upon impact.

As for high speed, i'm waiting for the damn watermelons to drop in price ($23NZD for a single whole watermelon currently). I'm sure a watermelon shot in either 210fps or 420fps will be better than my Best Shot video without all that fancy editing

And you still didn't decide to use safety goggles?

Come on, five bucks could get you two pairs of basic goggles and still leave change to buy a sandwich. I really don't get this mentality of spending hundreds on launchers but not the pittance it takes to get basic safety gear.

No offence taken. I do actually have a pair and I really should wear them, I just forgot to. I had a lot running through my mind before this shot and when I get to the fueling stage the adrenaline is already kicking in and my hands start shaking. That only happens when I shoot it in my backyard though, I guess it's a mixture between the danger, the noise and the power.

To be honest, shooting it in my backyard isn't the smartest idea ever either.

Well, that's a habit you have to cultivate. After a while, you'll start to get a sense of something being wrong if you haven't got goggles on.

Totally agree with Rag. After a shard of pin flew out of my pump and hit my eyebrow I always wear my eye protection even when I'm just pumping. And especially when shooting, since I can't be totally sure what I'm shooting won't just come back at me.

And good eye protection like that can be free if you know where to go

Really, i'm just posting videos individually until I have enough to make a compilation. Sorry about the resolution, my douchebag friend filmed with the camera on its side.

Shooting a frozen lemon at a 10x mix. Muzzle velocity is around 400ms (1650fps) and muzzle energy is over 6500 joules (HGDT says 7200 joules for 400ms). Sealing face was ripped off the piston, barrel support came loose and the new bumper was pretty much FUBAR. I also got some nice cuts on my hip, a big bruise and some cuts on my arm haha.

So what is the excuse for the lack of safety gear this time? Tell me you shot this before you discussed the safety gear here and you will do better next time.

Watching that shot looks like a shotgun blast shot from the waist without using the stock and butt. Do you shoot normal firearms? At that power a proper stock and butt pad is a good idea. Holding it loose at your side is a good way to get hurt.

I'm amazed you didn't drop it.

Other than damage to the launcher and yourself, the launch itself is pretty impressive.

Didn't need ear muffs since it was a shot in an open environment and didn't bring safety glasses because I didn't really need them. Unless the ABS barrel turned to shrapnel, I can't think of anything that has the potential to be dangerous to my eyes (i'm sure there's something but nothing I would worry about). The reason the barrel support slipped because I moved it down to the very last fitting, a smooth end cap and used some foam to push it up because it wasn't quite tall enough to reach the barrel.

I don't shoot firearms since it's not common at all unless you're a farmer or hunter and I can't think of anywhere close to where I live which has a shooting range. Though I have fired a shotgun before when I was 14 or so, for skeet shooting. I'm currently trying to think of a few designs so I can hip-fire it without getting hurt.

I was going to tell Tech to calm down about safety and holding it correctly... until I saw the kick on that.

Holy crap, if it's really kicking that much, you do need to come up with a more secure way to hold it or pad the back and set it against your shoulder or hip. Even to me, that looks seriously unsafe, even just from the recoil.

Not really laughable, but sure. I'd be more concerned by the fact that you were injured by the recoil than anything else.

I'll admit, that's all pretty BAMF, but really... safety...

If you have ever fired a 12 gauge shotgun and didn't have the stock secure and tight on your shoulder, you know first hand how fast they come back and smack you hard.

I got a nasty bruise from my 2 inch air cannon once. I forgot to remove my keys. The breech tried implanting them into my thigh. Now I make sure my pocket is empty before bracing the cannon there.
