2. Yeah I have a massive A frame ladder to reach it

Now, imagine you have matured, you have arthritis, and you are 75 years old. Do you think that at that point in your life you will have so much macho bravado?


My invention allows a person confined to a wheelchair to attend to their SD.

If you don't understand the benefit of this invention, I would find it hard to comprehend.


P.S. If we were discussing a fire situation, why would we bring up attending to a smoke detector?

The fire/smoke alarms in my house are accessable with a minimum ladder(3')....even though I have a 19' vaulted ceiling.

Smart planning on my part huh. 8)

as i said before they have a solution it it already, my fire alarm can be turn on/off for a test or if your cooking sets it off with a shine from a torch. no need to take it down because its hard wired in.

im sure you can find them allover the world, and any electrician can install it for you. 3am wake up the worst thing is your eyes need to adjust to the bright torch been.

OK I am on an 8 foot ladder. The ceiling is 16 feet tall. I am 75 years old.

Now what do I do?

Great idea for a leaning ladder.

What can it do in the center of a room?

If you have a pole bulb changer, would you use a ladder to change a light bulb?

(Actually, you may have to if the glass breaks.)

Imagine having a bulb changer that you routinely use and having to use a ladder at 3 am to reach your smoke detector in your slippers.

The video in your OP shows Larry David fighting with a smoke detector mounted on a vertical wall but, the same video shows your demo servicing a smoke detector mounted on a ceiling. They're not the same situation. How does your device handle detectors that are wall mounted as shown in the video?

Your 70 year old wife asks you to stop the beep so she can go back to sleep.

You have a 16 foot ceiling and an 8 foot ladder.

The smoke detector is in the middle of the room.

What are you going to do?

Do you really want people to die for doing what people do?

Do you consider yourself at the top of the evolutionary hierarchy?

Should SawStop be removed from the market because it prevents Natural Selection?

An excellent observation with respect to wall mounted units:

As said previously there is the lefty-loosey and righty-tighty problem.

Also, there is the problem of removing the plug between the electrical box and the smoke detector.

With the E-Z Reach,a 25* left twist will remove the entire smoke detector along with its troublesome plug.

If you can reach it by hand the smoke detector is easily removed.

However, equipped with a universal joint, you could use a pole and my thingy instead of a ladder and your hands to remove the SD.

On 8 foot walls, (not the best place for a SD) a step stool would be adequate for most people to reach the unit.

The Larry David episode was shot that way because the writers understood the extent of the problem.

Ok, I guess I'll finally add my opinion since the drama has subsided a bit.

Stu, your device appears well suited for what it was designed to do, though it is a very specific tool for one purpose only (that I am aware of. I suppose you could make additional attachments for lightbulbs and stuff).

The only downside I can see is most people will not want to buy a $xx tool that only sees use once in months at most. Your biggest potential buyers are people who maintain a large number of rooms with ceilings higher than a small ladder could handle... say more than 10 feet high. Few individuals will have this senario to deal with, so you may be better off targeting businesses, though I'm not sure what the building codes typically say about smoke detectors in commercial buildings. Most seem to have sprinkler systems.


There are tons of "almost, but not quite" inventions out there like this. If you want a better chance at success, you need to make it as versatile as possible; that way the customer feels like they'll get their money's worth because they'll use it routinely.

Put it another way, don't try to re-invent the "banana hanger"!

The small town of Pembroke Pines, FL bought 10,000 smoke detectors.

The Fire Department get many, many calls in the middle of the night from elderly who are awakened by their smoke detector low battery beep.

Can you imagine the cost of sending a Fire Engine out with a crew to replace a smoke detector.

A one use device could eliminate most of those calls.
