i was browsing the web, and noticed how expensive some people are selling things for air cannons. this got me thinking I should build custom valves, kits and full cannons to sell in an online store to fund some of my bigger projects.

Should I do this?

Maybe for making complex valves, but could I sell like cannon kits and pre assembled ones?

I'm going to cautiously say that, going by your post count, you don't have enough experience. People that sell parts online have years of experience and the right tools and machines to produce solid performing, safe, good parts. I don't think you posses the right requirements to sell homemade parts.

Precisely. I won't by ANYTHING homemade, unless I know that whoever makes it has a LOT of experience, can handle the responsibility, and who doesn't exaggerate his work. I was wanting to do the same, but I've decided to deal locally, so I can build up more, and more skill for new, and custom projects.

Do market research first. Getting exposure and start up capital is required.

Shure Shot has managed to get over the hump with good exposure in the news, gun shows, tv exposure, etc. They have an extensive product listing that is far beyond what someone looking at it would go "I can make that cheaper" like some of the other manufactures. Those doing very basic PVC cannons have not had a great track record for sales and longevity in the business.

Not to pick on this guy for an example, http://www.myaircannons.com/ you might want to contact him before starting. Most of his cannons fall into the catagory of "I can build that" just from looking at the pictures.

If you write him, he may be able to give you some insight on the cost of advertising, web hosting, verses the revenue. From his product line, I am guessing he has kept his regular job and does this as a sideline hobby.

I think you need to put more thought into it. I have no clue how old you are,but start locally and see how you do first. I have sold a few cannons to friends by letting them try mine. Friends are always a good huckleberry!!
