The myth concerning the eye patch, was that having a patch over one eye helped to preserve "night vision" in that eye; If you suddenly had to step into a dark area (like: below deck, for example) you could quickly switch the patch from one eye to another... Kinda stupid, in a way, because having one eye covered all the time cuts down on your peripheral vision. An attack from the covered side would be to an enemies advantage.
