With a bowling ball as a projectile and a chamber about the size of my hand.

How long of a barrel and at what PSI?
And what valve are you going to be using? And what size is it?

how long of a barrel do think i should use. i was thinking of using 4 soleinoids for fast release.i am going to use 100 PSI. i am new to this and am not sure what to use.

PS: would this work or am i just going to have it explode?

It will not explode if you use pressure rated pipe.
Alright im guessing your using four x 1" solenoid valve pneumatically acuated by a single blow gun. 4 is a HUGE HUGE waste if your chamber is so tiny. 1 valve would be alot better. Barrel wise I would say a 4 foot barrel. I would say with such a small chamber you would only get about 500-600feet for distance using 1 valve acuated by a blow gun.(dont ask what a blow gun is search it this time or use the damn wiki)

Edit: Thats nice......dont double post next time just edit your post.

what size chamber would you say for getting 1000 ft out of it with golfballs and also i was thinking of making interchangeable barrels for marbles too, how far do you think they would go. thanks
PS: i was thinking of using electric soleinoids

Modding it pneumatically will give much better results. Once again search how to mod them there are loads of stickies on these forums that show you how.
Download GGDT and fiddle around with it to find out how far something will shoot etc. Use the wiki at the top of the page. Search 'download GGDT' into google. Download it then go to the author's website look around there till you find the explanation and what to put in the parameteres and then mess around on GGDT until you find the ratio and length and diameters of your desgin you want.

You should look through the cannon show cases, then you will see many different designs all working on same basic princables. That will give you ideas on how to configure your own out of your own imagination. Thats how i did it when i first came here. Worked for me. Click here.

Just a rule of thumb...if you don't know how to build it, then don't build it.

In other words, go read about how to build a pneumatic gun, how it works, etc. Then figure it out on your own. I didn't tell you not to ask questions, I'm trying to tell you to think a little.

How bout starting on something small first.

Go to your local plumbing store and buy some pvc and a ball valve and whack it together, if you dont know how to whack it together, ask someone at the store and they will help you (I guarantee there will be someone working at the store who has built a spud gun before). Do some tests with it and you will find out what ammo works best, what pressure is best and things like that.

Then once you have got that sussed, make something bigger and better.

Things to keep in mind:
volume of chamber should be bigger than volume of barrel.
the bigger the valve, the more flow you will get therefore a better shot
the faster the valve opens the more efficient it will be.
Try not to use any parts that are narrower than the barrel.
Airbeds... so many different uses

Dude that will get you kicked out of any of the hardware stores around here! Don't tell anyone at the store what your buildin, just know what you want and pick it out yourself, or ask for exactly the part you need. And if they ask whats it for? Tell the your repairing home made irragation. For real.
