Ok heres the deal. I want to make a spud gun but not an explosive kind. I want to use air, California state has rules on explosive type spud guns. anywhoo, from what i've been reading, it looks like i can just buy a 2in pvc pipe about a foot long. i cap off one and put a 2in to 1.5 in converter on the other end. i then put a solenoid( or sprinkler valve) on the converter and put my barrel of varying length on the other end of the valve. correct? btw are there any recomendations on the brand/type of valve? i'm most likely going to buy it at lowes or home depot along with the pvc.

Basically all you need to know is that your gun should go like this:
Chamber--> Valve--> Barrel

Normally the main components of a pneumatic spud gun are:
Cap, Pipe for chamber, schrader valve (or some other way that you can put air in your chamber), reducer (bushing), some sort of fitting to connect valve (usally male adapters), then your barrel. About your "brand/type" question I never have had a problem with any brand. Now type matters though, I would recommend a modded sprinkler valve, but if your like most noobs, your not willing to pay that and go with a ball valve. So either a sprinkler valve and a ball valve will work. Be sure to post pics if and when you finish.

ok heres another question. iread up on how to mod your own in-line solenoid valve, like how to put in the air hose, and blowgun. in fact i have several blowguns for somereason in my garage, who knows they wee just there. anyway, what is the purpose of the blowgun? i mean how do you fire the vavle and what not? i dont understand its purpose, any help?

ok
a solenoid sprinkler valve uses a diaphragm system. What happens, is, that when you pump up your gun, the air pushes on both sides of the diaphragm (usually a small, flexible, rubber disk). Then, on a sprinkler valve that hasn't been modded, the solenoid releases the air on one side of the diaphragm, causing it to get sucked back because of the force on the other side. Because the diaphragm gets sucked back, it allows air to flow out into the barrel, shooting the projectile.
Now on a modded diaphragm, the blowgun takes the place of the solenoid, releasing the air. The reason that a modded valve is better, is because the blowgun releases the air faster than the solenoid, which makes the diaphragm move faster, which lets the air go to the barrel faster.
I'll try to find a link to a good picture explanation to help you
Edit:
Here is a good animated sequence to explain it http://www.xinventions.com/main/spud/how_quick.htm
