Yeah it does, you need plastic or some thin metal and runover the threads multiple times and lightly.Don't push the bit to hard or it will fold up on the bit.It takes patience.

However, if you had a boring bar and a steady hand and a really slow machine you could make proper rifling in a larger barrel. Thats tricky though.

Yes by hand it is dang tricky,I haven't got that right yet.I mess up half way through because I turn my lathe by hand to cut the rifling.

Oh so you wernt using the lathe tools?

And about the speed, to make it really slow, but in the backing gear.

Not to bore the inside and rifle. My lathe isn't long enough and it was made in he 30's.Kinda has a compatibility issue with modern tooling. At most it's a glorified wood lathe. It's a belt drive and I have it as slow as I can,the motor has no power adjust.

Well you can have the pipe in the lathe and then doesnt it have an opening behind the chuck for an extended piece of material? And the backing gear is a mechanical thing.

My lathe's hole in the back of the chuck is only big enough for 1/2" stuff.I'm still trying to figure out why that is.And I have no backing gear on mine.It relies on the 3-way switch.
