Ok, so me and my friends are gonna go play airsoft, but we are going to use a spud gun to shoot plastic easter eggs filled with airsoft bbs.
is it safe? or should we scrap the spudgun artillery idea?

dont put in an egg, thats to dangerous because it may not open. i would just use a bunch of paper. you would have to test it first to see because i cant tell you how powerful your cannon is.

if its combustion i would say it would be better if you didnt, but you just have to try it. you have to understand that cannons in general are not very safe.

if it was even remotly safe, it would be at long range. if its within about 30 feet or so i think you will be in the hospital, but ive never tried it.

I think he maens half an Easter egg, to use as a sabot. In that case, it would be fine, but you need to shoot up, like a mortar. Direct fire on someone could seriously injure/kill them, and you don't want that happening.

well ya... thats how artillary works. you shoot it up... no way in hell im going to shoot ANYONE with it directly. i was thisn though, maybe put a screen in the barrel, and put bbs on the screen, and shoot it up pretty high. would that be dangerous?

You mean like a window screen? If so, put it in a union to keep it secure. It should be safe that way.

The best way I have tried this is taking a 5" piece of a water noodle and cut it in the middle length wise. Hollow out the inside to place your bb's. Then put the two pieces back together and ram it down your barrel. It gives a nice spread.

really? i was think more like a tointpaper roll sabot Kind of like a muzzleloader Shell, Although a noodle might not fit down a barrel.

My first prototype I took a piece of pvc the same size as my barrel, cut it in the middle lengthwise. I then Lined the cut pvc with wax paper and taped the pvc back into its original postion. I then took expanding foam and filled the pvc with it until it was 3/4 full. Then I let it dry out. After it was dry I then removed the tape and removed the dryed foam sabot from the pvc. I would then hollow it out and fill it with bb's. The only problem was that it only lasted one or to shots before the cannon obliterated the foam. So I went to the water noodle as it was more durable, however I did have to add duct tape around it to match the size of the barrel before cutting it.

plastic easter eggs? you eat plastic? jks. :D ok that was a really bad joke anyway i believe it would be safe just don't aim it directly at someone's body and wear eye and maybe head protection. If you were a jacket it should take most of the sting. It would still probably hurt.I also don't think the bb's would fly far and at a high enough velocity to do anything but give it a wurl.

Happy Spuddin,
Poo.

are you going to be using it with a combustion mortar or a pneumatic mortar. if pneumatic id suggest just wrapping them up with some tissues.

yes its going to be safe, you would be lucky to notice it. the speed will not be that great from the fall, also you are going to have terible accuracy problems in the slightest of winds. i quite often have skirmishes with friends firing 0.5 - 1cm diameter river stones between 150 - 170 fps and the only posible way to get hurt was to get hit in the eye ( easly solved using workshop glasses), sometime you dont even feel it through a layer of clothes, a BB is only 0.012 g so its not going to have the mommentium to hurt you, a bb traveling at 170 fps will give you a little red mark for a min or so to give you an idea of how safe it will be. personally i would suggest coming up with a new idea because it is not going to be every effective weapon.

Man, if you want to make an good cannon for use in airsoft, I belive the only way is to make a grenade launcher for something like this:
