I normally advise against making your own springer rifles from scratch, but nothing wrong with modifying an existing one. As some of you might know, gas ram rifles replace the spring with a piston riding in a pre-compressed cylinder, they are available commercially but you can make your own and here's how it's been done (not by me)

Project Homemade Gas Ram part 1 and part 2

Needs a bit of metalworking skill but it should be well within the capabilites of many on this forum :)

The most obvious benefit is being able to vary the power easily by adjusting the pre-compression, as well a shorter recoil stroke.

would it be possible to make one of these using a pneumatic setup i.e. have a chamber and then say a ball valve and then the piston inside a cylinder on that?

-thanks.

i think it probably would work becuase i was experimenting today with a corck with a screw through it so i can shoot 12 gram co2 cartridges by puncturing the end.

BTW where did the spellcheck button run off to.

when you say you were experimenting do you mean using a the cork as a gas ram?

cool how well did it work?

i dont know if this will work but i am going to take a part a bike pump and use the piston in that as my piston and then the ball valve on one end and the barrel on the other.Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Talk to Hotwired, I think he had made a prototype along these lines.

The way you drew it, you can only get as much pressure developed by the moving piston as there is behind it, so it wouldn't give better performance. What you want is a bigger piston propelling the compression piston, like so:

if i had say a 1.5" larger chamber to a 1/4" compression chamber to a 1/8" barrel and the chamber for the air is about 2.5" by about 23".

Oh and if i went with my design from before how well would it work?

thanks.

that is awesome.I hope to just put a hole through paper at ten metres so i can have my own little airgun range.Im not too expierienced in this area but perhaps you could tell me if the design i had up there using a bike pump could that penetrate paper at ten metres?

thanks

It would work, but it wouldn't work better than if you just eliminated the piston and use the ball valve to feed air directly into the barrel - unless you used a burst disk behind the projectile.
