Well yeah, but 230A is nothing. In the capacitor bank I'm building, each individual cap. has a rated output of 2KA. Perhaps he needed an SCR that could take useful amperages.

I'll reserve judgement on this EM-CC until I see it. And how do you define a small tree? Because I'd say 8" or so diameter, and it takes a decent amount of energy to shoot through that, much less knock it down.

*googles electrothermal*

looks hard to make. I'd rather stick with my EM-CC. By the way it's 1.2kw, so I think DYI wins.

It should be an EM-C, but the bullet is filled with compressed air, so it's a EM-CC.

The battery’s charged, so I can ROCK AND ROLL!

*checks LED*
*LED is completely blank*
*checks internals, dusts off inside*
*notices that the switch is in the OFF position*
*flicks gun on, only to be startled by a little puff and some smoke from the dust that accumulated inside the gun*

in a minute, anyway. Dammit, I shouldn’t have made it so it has to charge ALL the capacitors at once.

How many joules DYI?

well hotwired.... mabey i just suck at surfing the net =) well anyway, i got it new =)
Plus, 40$ is alot for me, thats like my whole budget for the railgun =)

Are you sure thats 230A continues, not surge? mines considrably larger then the one in the pic.

Im going to use the SCR in a coilgun, for high energies, im doing a railgun, so my switch is the projectile.

i havent really been following this thread, but if it hasnt been brought up already then i would like to point out that electromagnetic spud guns dont exist... think about it.
"physics, gravity, and law enforcement are the only things that prevent me from operating at my full potential" - not sure, but i like the quote

One one hand, that IS true.
You will need a ridiculously powerful magnetic field to act out force on a potato.
Till the day I'm dieing, I'll keep them spuddies flying, 'cause I can!

230 is all it says, ebay isn't famed for high detail specs. Besides, from the look of the scale of the screwdriver next to them I wouldn't say they were exactly small.

nowadays, hardley anyone shoots potatoes, so in that case, most of the guns on this site arn't "spudguns". The hobby has evoved alot from that.

If you insist on shooting a potato, look at 4hv.org. One person made a induction launcher shoot a golfball, as they are more aerodynamic. just plop a piece of potato infront of the aluminum/steel, and there.

ya i saw that, bolt is a bit bigger on mine, and the actuall SCR part is longer, the bolt is shorter too.

EDIT: This was supposed to be part of the post just before this one...

I classify Spud guns as:

1. Being able to launch potatoes, as well as other miscellaneous objects.

So, A Electromagnetic spudgun's real name would be a railgun or a coilgun. You don't call a railgun an electromagnetic spud gun just for the he11 of it.

Unless... wait, maybe you could launch cooked potatoes out of a railgun, as potatoes have a bit of water in them... :D ? I wonder if Lorentz's laws apply to a potato  better test that out.

[EDIT]Cleaning rails from burnt potato residue. bad . At least it was only 2 rails hooked up to a power supply.

Also, I can't find my GODDARNED digital camera anywhere. I'd post a picture of my Electro-combustion, but it's GONE. Oh well, I wasn't too proud of that gun anyway.

On second thought... wait, I used up all my ammunition. Dammit. Now I have to make reloads.

I might have thrown my camera away. it was a very old one~ I'll get a replacement later. My very first pneumatic spud cannon is finished, it took the lesser part of an hour. Yay for cheap materials ~

Lowe's sucks. They didn't carry a schrader valve, so I went to target to get a entire tire tube. $3.15.

Also, documented is that I had to saw the facking gun in half after I set it down the wrong way and the schrader valve goes into the chamber. I wonder, If I cement it together, it'll be ok...

God darn leaks. I hate pneumatics...

...

Oh come on, I forgot I can't make reloads. I had them made by a friend who pressurized the things for me. They had tiny holes in the bottom which he stuck a pin through, and got the pin wet in rubber cement, and he'd pressurize the round and then pull out the pin, holding the rubber cement with his finger quickly while we waited a little more for the rubber to dry...

OH COME ON. THE BLOODY COPPER GOT DEFORMED.

Meh, My day's over.[/EDIT]

500W.

Darn thing fried itself to my rails.

Makeshift, of course. I had a feeling it would go wrong

[EDIT]I meant watts :p 500 kw would darn near fry it to ashes. [/EDIT]

Can't decide.
Combustion for portability.
Pneumatic for reliability.
Hybrid for power.
Electromagnetic for geek cred.

I'd probably say hybrid myself, but just because I like the portability/ergonomics of mine.

There aren't electromagnetic spud guns, but I think he meant to include electrothermal guns in that category as well. Larda's ETG is a shining example of that category's available power, but I can't imagine any vegetable matter surviving in the barrel of that thing, with ~10000psi and a few tens of thousands of degrees Kelvin behind it.

time to breed an industrucable potato..... 8)
10000PSI? On sam barros (powerlabs) website, it says plasma railgun armetures can reach 50k PSI, and that also uses lorentz force O.o. Imagine the power of that =)
