here is a new idea for a mortar the ammo has a pin on it that rupshures the burst disc and cause all the air to come through

I thought of something similar to this, except I never built it because for some reason I don't like the idea of a projectile flying in close proximity to my arm, but I think that the idea would work, you should try it (just be extra careful when you shoot it).

Edit: If you do make one, make the barrel really long so that you have time to move your hand out of the way, and to give the projectile enough time to accelerate enough to pierce the burst disc.

it could work in theory, but I agree with potatoflinger. Unless you can make the projectile slide down slower, it would be potentially dangerous.

It also depends on the seal around the projectile in the barrel. If it's relatively close to the id, then it will travel down the barrel slower than if it were say .25" smaller than the barrel.

It's not like you need to throw it into the barrel, just drop and move at the same time. Personally I haven't seen what the problem with mortars is. I'm referring to the launch so close to the arm, etc.

The problem, as with most things in life, is stupid people. The kind of peope that say "hey guys, watch this" only to never be heard from again. I can guarantee, there are people out there who would drop it in with their hand over the barrel, or their face for that matter. Making sure the mortal takes a couple seconds to launch helps minimize the chances of stupidity causing any sort of damage.

The kind of person who would stick their hand in front of this shouldn't be allowed anywhere near it. These things are inherently dangerous, and it is always up to the operator to use them safely.

The projectile has to build up enough momentum to break the burst disk holding over 100 psi. I have played around with a mortar idea on one of my small caliber burst disk guns, and it is pretty entertaining. A better idea than a projectile with a point is a sabot of sorts, that is placed behind the projectile, and is designed so that it only travels a short distance out the barrel. For this, a flat plate made out of lead or steel would work well, as long as it has a very sharp point on the back.

The idea has been thought of many times before, and some people have actually built them on a small scale.

Either way, you have to have your hand near the end of the barrel (for a realistic mortar). You just have to take as many precautions as possible and use your head.

I made a gun using this exact concept, and it works extremely well, performance wise. It's usually hard to pop a good burst disc that can hold a lot of pressure. You need a 3+ foot barrel to get it going fast enough to pop the disc, or it has to be at least 95% vertical.

wouldn't it be easier to use a sprinkler valve with a micro-switch located near the bottom?

or maby a metal disk that seals against the barrel held on by pressure.

maybe you could use one of those things that janitors use to pick up trash to drop the projuectile.

its funny, i had this same design concept at football practice today..... dont ask why because i really dont know, it just sorta poped in my head.

I did exactly what he described by accident.
My hybrid launcher was prepared to fire. I dropped in a piece of wood i wanted to shoot, it penetrated the burst disc and swoosh it was gone. This happened with a low pressure like 2bar (30psi) but i was luck to be not in the line of the projectile. I'm sure that would have hurt.

Come on guys, this problem is simple to get around.

Have a pin near the end of the barrel. Put the ammo down the barrel, the pin will stop it from falling down and then remove the pin from the side of the barrel and then boof.
