I have made water rockets before with pop bottle and i just use a hole drilled in the cap with a small tomato plant stake to stabalize, just fill about 1/2 with water and use an aircompressor blower piece 2 air it up,and let go...sometimes they fly quite high and go a fair way.takes a little practice to get it working well and u get realy wet :P

I didnt manage to go buy any parts today ( St.Patricks day hangover) :?

But I like the idea of nails clamped together or maybe a nail that is wider at the top then the bottom, since you need a decent sized exhaust aperature.

Thats animation is very useful, it highlights the principle very well in case anyone did not understand yet. Thanks. Although it should not be fired at such a low angle, it is a mortar after all.

Rubber gloves are another good idea.

Soda sounds quite messy and sticky, but interesting. Maybe baking soda and vinegar instead? Or one of the many pints I had last night ? :)

It seems that now we have a race to see who can launch their rocket first. Its like the X-Prize only smaller and with a very limited budget.

In my tests, 1 layer of foil bursts at about 10 psi.

So theoretically you would need at least 10 layers to reach 100 PSI. 10 layers seems like a challenge to fit onto one small endcap.

I've read were members here cut tuper ware lids for burst disc. Bet it take quite a bid of presure to bust that.

I just used a old Gaterade bottle 20oz i think, drilled a little hole in the lid, filled half way with water, shoved my air blower nozzle in it, filled with air untill the bottle expanded a little, let it go, i bet it went 100' or a little better !

Thanks for that idea, my niece's will love it !

If you built a clip into this it could be a fullt automatic, gravity fed, mortar cannon. This gives me ideas for a burst-fire cannon I might make. I thought of the same concept but it pushes the bolt into the chamber releasing the gas.
