Origin unknown, i beleive the reason your QEV failed is because it is a diaphram type.

the one you bought its a "poppet" type, wich uses a polycarbonate disk, aka why it can take so much pressure.

the ones from MCmaster should be able to hold 300 right?

This Is why it doesn't work now...
I took apart the QEV to sand down the sealing face so it would seal a little better at low pressures. I put it back together, but in the process I tightened the screws a little too tight and stripped the threads where the screws go in. Usually I overtighten alot of things for I am slightly compulsive. Now the air leaks out around the screws and the qev is totally useless unless I pour molten aluminum to fill the screw holes and then re-drill them. I don't have the equipment to this though...

Why don't you just drill and tap the holes one size bigger then the current bolt?

Unison: I would do that, but I cant use my Dad's drill press. I dont want to mess anything up either by using a normal drill.

The ball valve is acting as a "safety" .

This information was in the first paragraph.
