So cooking, even though it has advanced a huge amount, is primitive because cave men used to cook Mammoths 10,000 years ago?bluerussetboy wrote:Considering most of the principles(physic laws, theories and material) used on this website have been around for years, PRIMITIVE stands as an accurate description.
what do members think about the hobby?

hmm i think you guys take the "primitive" the wrong way..
mabe it does not mean what i think.. i mean like it is the same many times and we are very few in this world compared to football.
the hobby is great but may not be the thing that you take out on the street to show people.

I think what you are describing is more along the lines of, "Unique/Talent" spudfarm, rather than primitive.
Primitive (in this case) is talking about whether you think spudguns are for low-class/dumb people who have nothing better to do with there lives.
I think it's more of an art form than anything. It takes some mad skill to create a kick-ass cannon. It's truly a gift that everybody can have if they have the devotion.

I hate to break it to you Crowley, but in cooking there has been more technological advances and innovative ideas than in spudguns. But yes, you in a twisted sort of way could call cooking primitive. Obviously you didn't understand the Model T/Koenigsegg statement.

I think what he means is that it's a fairly new hobby compared to other things like baseball, football, etc.

Okayyyyyyy, enough of the evolution argument. I really enjoy this as a hobby, fairy inexpensive and a lot of fun to build, share with friends, and bench race with all of my Spudfile buddies with! Now stick that in your cannon and shoot it across the field!
It's not primitive - it's tried and tested!!!bluerussetboy wrote:Considering most of the principles(physic laws, theories and material) used on this website have been around for years, PRIMITIVE stands as an accurate description.
As for my view of the hobby - spudgunning is a lot like a guinea pig.
It's completely daft, and I know it's weird - but I love it anyway, even though I don't know why.
Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?

I don't think it's primitive. Maybe kind of immature (or at least most *normal* people think so), but if you're learning stuff that will help you later on then I don't think it's a bad hobby to have. I've learned everything from gas laws to electronics to how to deal with stupid people in the hardware store. It's a good "jumping-off" point to explore other fields.
A good rule to go by is; If you have to explain how your project works, it probably isn't primitive.

yes rag.. people asks you what you use your spare time on and you say: "i shoot potatoes at 1000fps out of my gun" and they just like "WTF"
but i love the hobby more than anything else, primitive or not!

Two definitions of 'primitive'. I dug out an old dictionary(google) for this.
1.crude: belonging to an early stage of technical development; characterized by simplicity
2.a person who belongs to an early stage of civilization
Well if that doesn't describe most spudguns and spudders I don't understand what primitive is.
maybe it's not primitive but arcane
requiring secret or mysterious knowledge

The world you're looking for, dear friends, is "esoteric".
Spudding is an esoteric hobby, and mabye a simple one too.
