This isn't mine, I found the link on the MAKE:Blog and thought I'd share it with you guys:
carbide cannon
Basically you mix calcium carbide with water and it produces acetylene gas, it's based on a kids toy from the 70's so it must be reasonably safe.

Why in the hell would you consider anything for children from the '70s "safe"?

yeah, acetelene i like the high explosive of gasses, like lets say propane was black powder, acetelene would be tnt so dont use that to fire a projectile cuz the chamber will detonate
in the upcoming presidential election, there will be several candidates who will be running, one of whom is Hillary Clinton. Now WAIT A SECOND!!! I though there was some sort of rule that prevented someone from serving more than two terms in office. Vote Against Hillary: Presidential Elections 08
from what I have seen acetylene releases far too much energy when it is ignited. its even worse than combining oxygen and propane gas. a carbide cannon should not fire ANYTHING, the design i have seen in Backyard Ballistics was designed and safety tested for blank shots only.
